    Ember Size when Smoking Slowly?

Generally, when the ember is small you are leaving some unburnt tobacco on the sides of the chamber. I just put a pipe nail on the ember and puff a few times, thus making the draft pull at the edges of the tobacco. Simple and you don’t need to relight.

What Music Are You Listening To - June, 2023

Listening to various big band jazz on my Pandora Mike Vaxx station. Mike is a great trumpet player who has played with everyone and happens to be a neighbor! Great stuff!!

***What Are You Smoking, June 2023?***

I'm enjoying a lovely bowl of C&D Three Friars. This blend has been cellared for a little over two years. For those of you who haven't tried this, it is va's, burley and a dose of perique. Excellent with coffee. I'm smoking it in a partially rusticated straight bulldog with a vulcanite stem made...

    Pipe Polishing: Needed?

I prefer a soft sheen. I use Howard Wax-It-All periodically on briar and vulcanite stems. This product is solid and comes in a small tub. It is a mixture of beeswax, carnauba, and mineral oil. If you use the warm water method to clean pipes, rubbing in some of this product after the pipe is dry...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2023?***

Smoking a bowl of “Derriston” in a 1950’s Brulor Mowbray squat Rhodesian. This pipe has a full sized bowl with the smallest tobacco chamber of all my pipes. Great smoke! Hot Punjana black tea with a splash of milk.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

Yet another bowl of "Derriston". This time in an E. Wilke N.Y.C. smooth Dublin. A very good pipe. Kirkland scotch is my tipple. Have a rewarding week, all.

What Kind of Pipes do you Like and Why?

I’m a traditionalist. I have too many pipes at this stage, but I like pipes that were popular in the early twentieth century. Smallish bowls and tapered stems. You didn’t ask but…… I don’t care for: Freehands Bamboo Brushed finishes Colorful stems (except tortoise) Churchwardens ( unwieldy when...

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

A delicious bowl of “Derriston” ( half Derringer and half Coniston) in a Blakemar Briars Sir Douglas pipe. Sauvignon Blanc to wet my whistle. Happy Birthday @UncleRasta! I intend to mail your present on Monday.

Kaywoodie Stem Replacement With Original Stinger?

Hello folks. I bought a 1950’s Kaywoodie Standard apple a while back. It had been polished up and looked good and smokes well. However, apparently the stem was polished so thoroughly that it was wafer thin and has subsequently been bitten through. There is not enough vulcanite remaining to...

    Flexible Falcon

I particularly love the Bantam bowls. I throw the stems in the dishwater to clean them. My oldest is from 1972. You can never sour the "heel" of these pipes and you can put them down at length when you are working. They generally don't get the respect they deserve. Get you a Falcon!!

    Refinishing Briar Pipe

I use Everclear on Dr Grabows to remove the varnish. It doesn’t remove the stain apparently, and is potent enough for a very quick wipe. Don’t over do it! Then I rub in some Howard Wax-It-All, a food grade beeswax, carnauba, and mineral oil combo. Works great on the briar and keeps a restored...
