    Warhorse Bar Green

What a coincidence: due to this thread, I had my first experience with War Horse yesterday, too. Because I favour medium to full tobacco, I found myself puffing away, wondering what all the hullabaloo was about; I thought it was full-bodied, but nothing exceptional. Lol, ten or fifteen...

    Ennerdale: A Review

Shhhhhh! Let's try and keep that quiet! It's (very!!!) slightly broken Ennerdale flake, but one saves $20 buying a 500g bag over the same amount of Ennerdale in the box. One of life's little mysteries...

    Need a Couple of Noob Recommendations . . . .

I can't speak to what's available in Prince George, but in Toronto, SG CH (chocolate) Flake and the Mac Baren 7 Seas Red are easy to buy...at a price of course. Calling CH Flake an aromatic does violence to the word, but it is a wonderful, albeit eccentric, tobacco. And it is cocoa-y. I find...

    Ennerdale: A Review

What shape of pipe did you smoke it in, a billiard perchance?

    Samuel Gawith 1792 Flake

1792 is such a Samuel Gawith product! That's meant in the best possible way. Like Grousemoor, the assorted oddly flavoured plugs and flakes (both available, and discontinued), it's part of the last stand by a small, independent blender. I'd like it for no other reason than that. But I like for...

Old Prince Albert in a Can

Now you know what you have to do: smoke it! I'm a little envious...

    How to Unscrew a Mouthpiece

Put me in the "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey" camp; it just feels natural. Am I the only one who lubes the mortise and tenon, though? I use a high-graphite pencil, in my case a General 9XX, and cover as much of the mortise and tenon as I can. Makes removing/inserting the stem much nicer.

    Stokkebye Cube Cut

I used to smoke a LOT of it at work before retiring. It's got a lot going for it: cheap, tastes great, works well indoors and out, the aroma is inoffensive verging on pleasant when around others, ages well, and it's great in a cob! I have found it can be nippy if smoked too quickly. And it is...

Trouble Keeping Sutliff Ready Rubbed Lit.

Another thing to try is really light the tobacco. I'm not being a wise guy... when I light a cube cut or rough flake, I don't take away the flame once the tobacco seems well lit; I give another couple of seconds. It works for me, it might help you too.

    Toning down Aromatic Blend

I like your thinking! I've never had Two Timer, but experimenting with just a small amount; you can't go wrong.

    Toning down Aromatic Blend

In my experience with trying to do this, i.e., tone down an aromatic, I have found that adding just a bit of the aro, say 5 or 10% of the total to the base, is a good place to start. I do recall trying a fifty-fifty mix of something cherry; the aromatic effect was all but unchanged. It's a lot...

    Falcon Bantam Bowl

Very nicely done: it's ready for decades of service! I like that style of bent stem too. There are times I see some rather awkward looking versions...

    Tobacco Quality

Greg Pease maintains that all pipe tobacco is top-tier quality. I'm not going to argue with the man; he's been in the blending business a long, long time. A pet peeve of mine is reading someone's review of a blend that they don't like; invariably, they will state that it's made with poor...

    Falcon Bantam Bowl

I second this, both for the reasons given, and a bantam bowl doesn't have much wood to spare for topping! I'm intrigued by the contrast between how little it's been smoked, as evidenced by how clean the underside of the bowl is, and the extent of the damage. Someone really didn't like Falcons.

    USPS Questions

Once it's out of the US it's not a USPS issue, it's a Norwegian customs and/or post issue, no? I experience the thrills getting my tobacco delivered to Canada. Once the shipment arrives at the border, I track using the Canada Post site; it's generally a little more precise.

Making my Own Pipe Cleaning Solution.

Decades ago, I came across the recommendation to add a few drops of vanilla extract to the alcohol used for cleaning a pipe. There was a plausible reason for the practice, which I've long since forgotten. I'm with @daveinlax , simple alcohol works very well. Admittedly, sometimes it needs the...

The Right Pipe for Smoking Licorice Tobacco

At some point within the last decade, I actually scored a bag of Blackpool; I was in heaven! Hands down, my favourite Germain blend. I mourn the loss of GH Brown Flake Liquorice. It wasn't at all liquorice-forward, but it was there, and made a great all day smoke. I do detect licorice (I adapt...

    Chewable Plugs?

I found the xx twist an entirely different, and more enjoyable, experience chewed. Although "chewed" is the wrong word; I let a slice sit in my upper cheek, like snus. Delivers enough nicotine for me, and no spitting. The brown rope is noticeably stronger in the mouth.

    Beat the Gurgling!! Here's how . . . . .

Tamp towards the draught-hole. Problem solved. It really is that simple, and was figured out long, long ago. I do that with my Petersons and at the end of each smoke, I'm left with ash and a few bits of tobacco...and, yes, the draught-holes are comically high. Give it a try.
