Meerschaum Lined. Best Of Both Worlds? Or, "Drawbacks Of Both Materials"?

Yeah, since reading about the pressed meerschaum I have thought that I would prefer to buy block. Although when hunting around on ebay, it's almost impossible to tell (not so much with the pipes clearly stamped, but certainly with those meerschaum lined).

Meerschaum Lined. Best Of Both Worlds? Or, "Drawbacks Of Both Materials"?

That is a slick looking pipe embers, is that a Dr Grabow? Btw embers I was wondering how to find your youtube vids. I thought I had them bookmarked but can't find them atm. Do you think you link me to them?

Meerschaum Lined. Best Of Both Worlds? Or, "Drawbacks Of Both Materials"?

chasingembers Really? Come on. This goes against what pretty much everyone says... same briar pipe for a week? not to mention a month... How many times a day? This kinda goes with what I thought before I started pipe smoking. I'm genuinely interested in this approach/possibility of smoking...

    Overdrying Aromatics

UPDATE: On emptying the pipe, it turns out I didn't waste as much tobacco as I imagined... in fact virtually none was wasted... I hadn't been tamping enough.

    Overdrying Aromatics

Just packed the Alco/Falcon with some RY straight out of my jar. So no real drying at all, it was jarred straight after the tin was cracked open. Immediately upon lighting I taste the plum much more stronger and also... the smoke from the first two minutes of smoking is cold. Not just cool...

    1800’s

Jeez Louise! Some lovely inspiring pictures here... What kind of money would one be talking for good condition 100+ year old pipes... I'm getting on ebay for a while. You never what might pop up. Would love to be able to post some pictures that would not embarrass me in thread like this. Kudos...

    Overdrying Aromatics

Trial, error, and experimentation. It seems to be the name of the game. I must try St. Brunos. I mean they sell it in the supermarkets over here. If I ever get stuck in a Dawn of the Dead situation. At least I've got St. Bruno's, provided I'm carrying a pipe ha ha

    Overdrying Aromatics

Sounds good alaskanpiper. Think I'll try it without the drying in the Alco (Falcon). That should remove any chance of gurgling at least. Have to say I did enjoy the RY better before drying it. Also I think I'll pick up some McBaren Vanilla Flake next time I'm in my B&M and will eventually get...

    Overdrying Aromatics

So Royal Yacht is very lightly flavoured to begin with, so it makes sense that drying it (even just for a short while?) will result in an absence of flavour. I was keen to try it when I first got the tin and just filled a bowl. That explains why I got more noticable plum taste at first... At...

    Overdrying Aromatics

Smoking cardboard would certainly work out cheaper ha ha. So the flavourings do evaporate then?

Meerschaum Lined. Best Of Both Worlds? Or, "Drawbacks Of Both Materials"?

Hey. Thanks, some good food for thought there... @davek: so the meerschaum does indeed absorb moisture? I wonder how this works in regards to needing rest and possible saturation (of sorts). @stika: "Also there is no meerschaum lining in the stummel so that will soak up moisture into the...

Meerschaum Lined. Best Of Both Worlds? Or, "Drawbacks Of Both Materials"?

Hello. Just wanting to learn a bit more about how a should look after my meerschaum lined pipes. From what I have read. Meerschaum (fully meerschaum) pipes are a lot more forgiving in regards to resting the pipe. You don't need to rest them as often and for as long as you would a briar. Does...

    Overdrying Aromatics

Hello all. Since Christmas I have been enjoying Royal Yacht. This is my first aromatic blend (besides Clan, which probably doesn't count ha ha). From what I have heard and read, aromatics are said to need extra drying out time. At first I was not drying out for really long, and thus ran into...

How to Sharpen Your Sense of Smell and Taste

Candles?? I enjoy scented candles... Don't judge me! The candles add a bit of mood and also can both compliment and mask the pipe smoke a bit (the last point is more for the benefit of others rather than myself). But more in response to the question I found that I am now more able to identify...

Advice On English Blends For a Beginner

I really like Nightcap. It's kinda what I was expecting/hoping for (without knowing it) when I got into pipe smoking. Tried it through an Alco (Falcon-like pipe) and even liked it even more. I have been smoking it like 90% time since I started smoking... just starting to want a bit of variety...
