I'm reading the biography of actor Dwight Frye, best known as Renfield in the 1931 Dracula. It is an in-depth account of a truly talented and versatile actor who gets type-cast as a "creep" in his Hollywood career. Wonderfully written and profusely illustrated with photos, both professional and...
I have two, one I bought at Iwan Ries in the 70s and one I got from Bill Taylor at a Chicago show. The one from Ries is just like the one in your picture. The other is a bent billiard.
Like many, I use them as "tasters." They're way more sturdy than a clay, and cleaner than a cob. The graphite...
The Earls of Leicester perform "Earl's Breakdown" live at the CMA theater, 2018, featuring Jerry Douglas, dobro, Charlie Cushman, banjo, Shawn Camp, guitar, Barry Bales, bass, Johnny Warren, fiddle, and Jeff White, mandolin.
Spent some quality time with my Saturday ZOOM buddies as I smoked some 1989 McClelland No. 24 in my old Barling's 409 smooth pot with a saddle stem. I had my usual beverage, Peach/Mango Green Tea in a tall tumbler with bergs and a splash of Honey Jack. A lovely way to spend the afternoon.
I've posted this before, a few years ago, but with all this recent talk of Johnny Hartman here, I wanted to share this again. It is Johnny performing one of my favorite songs, live on Sammy Davis Jr.'s TV show in 1966. We also get a glimpse of the multi-talented host on vibes.
Hank Jones is on...
Let's invite the Bill Evans Trio to usher in November with "Autumn Leaves" featuring one of the greatest groups in jazz, Bill on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motion on drums.
You are quite welcome my friend!
I drink quite a few glasses each day, and there is a two-quart bottle in the fridge at all times.
Drink it in good health!
I just spent a few fun hours with my Saturday ZOOM crew of pipe buddies. In anticipation of Halloween, I smoked my 2012 Peterson smooth Dracula 999 filled with my "Dino's Mixture" (Full Virginia Flake, University Flake, Syrian Latakia, and a soupçon of Samovar and 55-year-old Mahalla). A tumbler...
I use them to keep my stems toothmark free. I put one on just before I smoke and remove it immediately after. I wipe and clean the stem every time I smoke. Yes, my Upshalls are particularly prone to yellow after using the rubber bits.
Today is Manos Hatzidakis' birthday (1925-1994).
Probably best known for his film score for Never on Sunday.
Here is a song from his album Fifteen Vespers:
"O Tahidromos Pethane" (The Postman Has Died).
Manos Hatzidakis, piano, Dimitris Fambas, guitar, Gerasimos Milaressis, guitar, Aliki...
cwpiperman, I've been trying to catch-up with the posts, and missed your birthday! Sorry. Hope it was a good day for you.
Although very belated...
Happy Birthday!
