Forum Jazz fans and Jazz musicians?

I have a wildly eclectic appreciation for all musical styles. But Jazz is one of the primary genres I truly love. And, I've been lucky enough to see many of my favorites live at various clubs and concerts here in Chicago: Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, the MJQ, Miles Davis, and Oregon among many...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2023?***

I had my first pipe in nearly three weeks! I've been fighting a nasty UTI and felt quite well enough today to meet with my ZOOM buddies. It was just four of us today, many of the others are in Las Vegas. I smoked some Samovar in my Sixten Ivarsson designed Stanwell 90, a small, slightly bent...

What Music are You Listening to? September, 2023

In honor of George Gershwin's birthday, September 26, 1898, here's a wonderful clip from a 1932 Rudy Valee radio program in which George talks about his music, plays versions of "Fascinating Rhythm", "Liza" "Prelude" and "I Got Rhythm" and kibbitzes with Rudy. After watching the first clip, you...

***What Are You Smoking, September, 2023?***

I had a wonderful session with my Saturday ZOOM friends, while I smoked some Samovar in a pipe I bought from the late Steve Weiner in 1997. My usual Peach/Mango Green Tea with a fistful of bergs was my drink.

On the 97th. anniversary of John Coltrane's birth, and in memory of the four girls killed 60 years ago last week by a Ku Klux Klan bombing of a Baptist church in Birmingham, here's a live performance, less than 3 months after the bombing, of Coltrane's "Alabama" which he composed as a memorial...

Just finished a lively and fun ZOOM meeting with my buddies. I smoked some Drama Reserve from a 2015 tin I had opened last night. I filled my GBD XTRA 335 smooth apple with a saddle bit, and remembered why this was my favorite tobacco before Samovar was released. I hadn't smoked Drama for a...

Chicago born Richard Davis left us last week. If you are unaware of this bass giant, you have a hole in your music appreciation. He was primarily a jazz musician but was heard on more than a few thousand recordings by rock, blues, and popular musicians, singers and instrumentalists, aside from...

The Saturday ZOOM gang got together again this afternoon for some smoke, BS and camaraderie. I was in the mood for some aromatic, instead of my usual English, and dug into a jar of 20-year-old McClelland 2000 Fragrant Matured Cake (talk about matured and fragrant after two decades!). I filled my...

Yiassou Christos D. Tsatsaronis! I like Mr. Block's other character Bernie Rhodenbarr, the gentleman burglar, a bit lighter and quite funny. Two of my favorites are Robert B. Parker's Spenser books, with Boston as the background, and Sara Paretsky's V. I. Warshawski books that feature Chicago...

Current State of The Pipe Filter

In my few pipes that provide for a filter, Savinellis and cobs, I use only the Savinelli balsa filters. I tend to smoke these pipes when I walk my dog, as it eliminates the need to stop and use a pipe cleaner and helps keep in check the condensation that builds up on many Chicago Fall and Winter...

    Tooth Paste For Stem Cleaning

+1 for Flitz. Toothpaste is too abrasive. And, you could brush your teeth with it as it's non-toxic, non-abrasive and USDA approved. However, I prefer Pronamel for my teeth and Flitz for my pipe stems and metalwork.

I am a huge fan of the late, great Michel Petrucciani! I saw him every time he was in Chicago, both clubs and concerts. Despite his genetic disorder he was a masterful pianist in the style of Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Oscar Peterson. One of my favorite albums is The Power of Three with Jim...
