    That Morning Smoke

I enjoy a bowl of Early Morning Pipe to start the day. Obviously, the optimal time to smoke it is printed right on the label… But I do enjoy it quite a bit with a cup of coffee.

Don' Buy the Regular Mouth 8 OZ Ball Mason Jars

EDIT - the 8oz size wide mouth jar has apparently been discontinued by Ball, though other brands do exist. Walmart closed out their stock and I bought 48 of them at the time. It's sad as they were the best jars for tobacco, because they are stackable.

    Flavor Intensifying Throughout the Bowl?

It depends on the blend, honestly. With most aromatics, the first 1/3 or 1/2 are better than the last 2/3 or 1/2. For many English blends, they’re great all the way through as the flavors shift and different component leaves come to the fore. For Virginia blends, it all depends on the...

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

Not sure if this belongs here, but the latest PPN has a link to a beautiful P-Lip tamper being offered for presale: https://petersonpipenotes.org/465-the-pipe-pilgrimage-of-the-nevada-pete-geek-an-npg-diy-on-fills/

    Losing My Taste For Tobacco

When it gets hot, that's when you bust out the stock of Sutliff Frosty Mint that you've stashed away at the back of your cellar!

    Vanity or Insanity... or BOTH?

I have found it quite necessary to have labels on both top and side of jars, as I have some in drawers and others stacked on shelves, so I need to see what’s in the jar from top and side. As to how detailed you get with design? Knock yourself out! I use painter’s tape and a sharpie.

WTB/WTT - SPC Snoqualmie Falls and Yakima Valley (6/11/25)

Weekend bump on this, I’m still trying to track down some samples or tins of SPC Snoqualmie Falls and Yakima Valley. Anyone have any deep in your cellar?

    Deertongue Fragrance Fading?

Huh. I just arranged a trade for a bunch of Crooner, Engine #382, and Gentleman Caller. I like the stuff. Diff’rrent Strokes, as they say.

That was absolutely fascinating, sable. Well worth the read (even if it means I’m now late to head to work - a problem you are rightly done having!).

    The Briary In Alabama

I guess I should be more specific: I’d love to hear notes and recommendations from folks who aren’t selling the product?

***What Are You Smoking, July 2025?***

Smoked some Uno and Aberrant tonight, along with Pipe Force IV. All of this from a bulk sale via OldBoss, not tinned, and it was all delicious. Glad I bought full pounds of each.

    The Briary In Alabama

I’ve asked about Ephemeris literally every time The Briary is mentioned, and have yet to hear anything detailed about it. I’d love a review, notes, whether or not it’s worth a (rather spendy) phone order. How about this time?

What Are You Drinking? July 2025

We discovered a forgotten mixed case of wine in our (uninsulated) garage a few weeks ago. It’s been there since our move to northern Indiana in 2016. Surprisingly none of the corks had dried out or popped, but obviously the heat/cold cycles of the seasons have been brutal (including weeks in the...

I think I got a cavity just looking at those photos! Wouldn't that be as sweet as straight sugar cane?

My Mixture 965 new and old

Well... your first sentence is certainly true. The second claim, "better leaf is available now than 50 years ago," is highly debatable, depending on one's appreciation of leaves like Yenidje (no longer available at all) or Syrian Latakia (not available). And some folks (e.g., Mike McNeil) go so...
