    SG Navy Flake

I bought a couple more tins of this recently, after a long break - I have one stashed away, but decided to leave it where it lay and pop a fresh one. "Fresh" is a matter of debate - the date code translated to 18 months old, so it has stewed in its own juices for a respectable period. I think...

    A Simple Pleasure

I've been smoking Ogden's Gold Block in a cob first thing in the morning, just to get the ball rolling. This is a very mild ribbon cut blend of bright sweet Virginia and white Burley with a "secret" and very restrained topping, so more of a "something rather than nothing" creamy smoke...

    Gold

I have a vested interest in the gold price. Back at New Year, there was astonishment when it finished 2023 at $2,000/ounce Troy. A few weeks ago, disbelief as it exceeded $2,600. Today, it peaked at tree-fiddy short of $2,700. Paradoxically, this is not great news. It means that the fiat...

    Charatan Factory, 1945

I enjoyed this. The post-war pipe shortage, I never knew.

    Calabashes

Pretty good swear word, now I see it. Anyway. Does anyone have a pukka calabash? Do any of the Peterson's fall into that category? I'm prompted to ask by the recent realization that my (cheap) 9mm filter pipes, with filter chambers left empty without filters, give me superior flavours to...

Weekend Auroras Highly Likely 4/5 October 2024

An X7 solar flare yesterday and an X9 today, pretty much pointed at us, mean that the chance of low latitude auroras (aurorae?) is very possible tomorrow and Saturday nights. What was the May event? X20? I can't remember. Still, these might have enough grunt in close succession to give us a...

    Inhalation

I tend to find, having been a lifelong cigarette smoker, that old habits die hard. While for the most part pipe smoking is a flavour experience limited to the mouth, what I find especially with Virginias or VaPers is that as I luxuriate in the taste, I want more, and take down the smoke at...

    Invicta Pear

PAD. Ordered this morning, one of these which is nearly a Prince. https://www.invictabriars.com/shop/classic/briar-pipes-pear/

    Cavendish

Mark, that is. What a remarkable bloke. 35th Tour de France stage win today and how old? 39? Something like that. A record, anyway, most stage wins in le Tour by anyone, ever. Chapeau that man.

    Pipes, Maturity & Flavours

I have been burning in my new Peterson Bulldog, destined to become #1 favorite if I'm any judge. My tobacco has been exclusively Germain's Gold Leaf until today, tried some Cabbies in it. This caused me to reflect that, while this pipe has all the potential to become my favorite, when it comes...

G&H Rich Dark Honeydew (EU Spring Dew): a New Appreciation.

I bought an ounce of this to get the Jack Hargreaves experience - he was forever lunting around with his Falcon hanging from his mouth, and the Gallaher forerunner was his smoke. Of course, when I first got this two or three weeks ago, I loaded it into my Jack Hargreaves tribute Falcon and put...

    UK Weather

Apparently, according to the Met Office, May was the warmest since records began. Most of us, with our jumpers and central heating on, would dispute this - this Spring has been cold, wet and dismal. But no, says The Telegraph. It happened at night, so we didn't notice. Welcome to comedy central.

    Show Us Your Cigar Cutters

I'll be darned if I can can get along with the few cigar cutters I've had my hands on, and it makes me shy away from cigars. Doubtless this is because they've all been cheap as chips, so I've eyed up the ascending price scale, still have no clue. Yet, some modest Cubans languish among my...

    Hardcastle Crescent 112

Part of a haul of estate Hardcastles is this Crescent 112, unused. Probably made comparatively recently, looks like a very nice pipe. The stem was a bit loose, like a sausage in the Mersey tunnel (had it ever been to Liverpool?), but a short cold water treatment has sorted that out perfectly...

    Why a Reject?

My estate Fribourg & Treyer "Reject" arrived yesterday, had a smoke in it and it's absolutely fine - so why was it stamped REJECT? For the tiniest flaw, I suspect - a tiny void in the briar which had revealed itself in the making. What do you think?

    Restoration Tips & Tricks?

Title edited. Please read Rule 9. Is there anywhere "under one roof" where I can find info on deep cleaning and restoration of old pipes? I have some incoming, one of which also has stem damage - is there anyone in London who does repair, should it be beyond my help?
