Different pipes for different tobaccos, Myth?

You would get along great with my uncle Rich. He's 89 years old now, and drives his 1996 Silverado he bought brand new in 96. The truck has over 800,000 miles the last time I knew, that was about 4-5 years ago. The kicker is, he has owned a very successful home building business sinse the early...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

Read my post sloooooowly. :) Sorry, we get around $700 for the Sporterized Garands, depending on condition. They dont last an hour. The thing about most Garand buyers, they won't want brand new receivers, which really are 95% of the joy of owning one. But, many also dont want to spend the money...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

Yep, im glad I kept a few of them. The problem is that so many people sporterized many of the Garands snd Mausers for hunting. Guys come in our shop all the time wanting TOP DOLLAR for a Garand with 4 inches chopped off the barrel, and 2 inches chopped off the butt. If they are in shooter...

Different pipes for different tobaccos, Myth?

Not only do I notice flavor differences in different sized bowls, but a particular pipe can have the biggest difference in my experience. Whether it be the shape of the bowl, the dynamics of the pipes internals, the wood, or just "science", some pipes just taste better. Im currently smoking some...

The Ugly Side of Buying Estate Pipes

Hey buddy, I know what I have!! Thats almost like the "it ran when parked" in the car world. Ive drove hours to look at a car that "ran when parked", just to find missing spark plugs and blown out freeze plugs. That must have been an interesting last drive. :)

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

My wife recently stole my Spiderco Mantix 2 I recently bought. It uses Spidercos Spy 27 steel that I wanted to test. But it now lives in her car. :(

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

There are two types of Chinese knife makers. There are the American owned knife companies who have low end Chinese companies make their knives. Then sell the junk knives in gas stations and on late night tv. You know them because they usually have stuff like "USA American Navy", or "Ninja Snake...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

Ive went through all levels in the knife world over the years. It started with hunting, where 1095 was king in the 1980s. Then I got into collecting high end pocket folders. Then I went back to just hunting and bush knives. The last few years im back into pocket knives, but the days of 5cr and...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

You may be shocked how far budget steels have come. Some of the knifiest guys are realizing this. Steels like 14c28n and AEB-L are coming into the light. Both of these very close in composition steels are tougher than all the super steels, and nearly as corrosion resistant as all of them. This...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

I remember the wooden barrels full of Enfields, M1 Garands and Carbines, SKS, Mausers.....at Woolworths for $50-$80. :(

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

There is a weird thing in the "collector" world. Ive seen it in the pipe world, the knife world and the firearm world. That is that most of the people in these hobbies believe in the "buy what you can afford" camp. As many of you know, ive really been into the budget knife thing lately. A couple...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

Ive got a Facet 194 looking for a new home. Its a great pipe, lightly smoked, and apparently rare as can be. I've never seen another.....and ive looked. Most here are pretty sick of hearing about my Stanwell 194, but SOMEDAY someone will have information about it. :)

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

When I went from the occasional Dr Grabow of CB or Borkum Riff, things really changed. I smoked my cheap drug store pipes with my cheap drug store tobacco on and off from 1987-2003ish. While stationed in Afghanistan we would get big care packages of cigars sent from either private gifters, or...

    Battle of McCVirginias

The Frogs are great, but 5110 for heavy Lat and 2020 for a lighter Lat are just as good in my opinion. 2045 is a good "Balkan" style blend with Orientals and a touch of Latakia.

    Battle of McCVirginias

The Frog Morton series is absolutely their most popular Latakia blends. But good luck finding any. Kinda like their Virginia blends, they also made Latakia blends taste "different" than other makers. So, pretty much any of their Lat blends are great.

    Battle of McCVirginias

5110 was my favorite Latakia blend second only to PS Balkan Supreme from a few years ago. I know that Peter Stokkebye still makes it under the Arango name, but it is absolutely different...to me.... :) I replaced 5110 with C&D Star of the East as my "go to" latakia blend. SOTE is a great blend...

My father's Dunhill Root Briar 52821

Im not sure who is the go to anymore, but this link may help. The Sav GDO is another great pipe. https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/calling-all-pipe-restorers.97119/

    Battle of McCVirginias

Agreed, McClelland Virginias get a lot of the praise, but their Latakia blends are legendary. I personally love MacC Virginias. I have tins and jars in my cellar which cover the spectrum of their portfolio. But I kick myself for not hoarding more of their Latakia blends. Im not into the...

My Epiphany About the Importance of Packing

Agreed. Many pipers say wet tobacco causes tongue bite due to steam. The tongue and mouth are a lot tougher than people think. Have you ever picked up a piece of hot food that burns your fingers and popped it in your mouth? It feels fine in your mouth. Or been sipping coffee that is perfect...

My Epiphany About the Importance of Packing

I dont believe wet tobacco causes tongue bite. If fact, its verifiably not the case. Tongue bite is caused by a chemical reaction to tobacco, or something added to the tobacco. I smoke many moist blends, no tongue bite. But when I smoke some blends at any moisture level, they bite....looking at...
