    Dang! I Missed Pipestud’s Grand Re-opening!

Fast it was indeed. But thrilled Steve's back. Congratulations, Steve! Both there, and here too, I have to say, it's been a very bullish few days for Esoterica (and no surprise--Penzance in particular). Dare I ask, re Esoterica blends, if there is any way to predict (in normal times, if not...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2020?***

A very pleasant week dedicated to Pease Caravan (cellared in May 2007) in a succession of Dunhill bents and billiards. This providing an excellent excuse to track down (among a few other versions) a spectacular 1952 video on YouTube of Duke Ellington performing a version of the timeless...

Are These as Big a Score as I Feel Like They Are?

To simplify the dizzyingly complex history of Dunhill pipe tobacco, arguably the three key dates to know are: --1981 (when the production of almost all of Dunhill's tinned blends was transferred from Great Britain to Murray in Northern Ireland); --2005 (when Murray ceased production, and...

    Hello from New Orleans!

Although I am almost as new here as you are, I feel compelled to send you a warm welcome from the Brooklyn waterfront. For two and a half years, half a lifetime ago, I was amused to have one of the most colorful residential addresses possible on this continent: 825 Bourbon Street (two elegant...

Not Quite Red Meat For The Duke Streets Irregulars--More Like An Expensive Plate Of Vegetables (Original circa 1930 Pipe Shape Catalog)

Life is peppered with regret. Big and small. Among the latter, for me, is failing bite the bullet and pony up a dozen years ago to buy John Loring's methodical, self-published four-volume compilation of Dunhill catalogs (on the other hand, at least I had the good sense to part with $20 to get...

1920s Loewe "Elton" with Sterling Band--The Puzzles Posed by a Not So Benign Century of Use

What an exhilarating three hours--thank you all so very much for so generously sharing your knowledge. Wow. (And, yes, first thing tomorrow morning I'm ordering a copy of the Loewe Packet.)

1920s Loewe "Elton" with Sterling Band--The Puzzles Posed by a Not So Benign Century of Use

Correction: to set the record straight, the silversmith's mark often seen is RD not BD (Robert Dumenil, who took over the family business in 1895). Apologies.

1920s Loewe "Elton" with Sterling Band--The Puzzles Posed by a Not So Benign Century of Use

Amazing. And best of all, now I finally know what the stem ought to look like. As for "extra strong fitting". . .

1920s Loewe "Elton" with Sterling Band--The Puzzles Posed by a Not So Benign Century of Use

There is also an L&Co on the band, as there should be. And yes, I too see just the hint of a capital "M" (slightly bigger than the rest of the letters, not a practice it seems with more recent Loewes where the lettering of names is uniform). So, Melton sounds likely.

1920s Loewe "Elton" with Sterling Band--The Puzzles Posed by a Not So Benign Century of Use

Gentleman, thank you indeed. The only stamped nomenclature that has survived clearly is an L & Co within an oval with o raised and underlined. So, not a Sasieni (but maybe, to speculate wildly, the sort of trademark issue that if Sasieni already had such a model in its line being offered for...

Brooklyn--A Room with a View, of One's Own, on the Waterfront

DiFara's--to which, alas, I've never been--is evidently alive, well, and flourishing. Not only have they opened a small boutique counter within a trendy food hall near me, but if your Jones is really serious, they've embraced the digital era, and at prices starting at just $89 (for two "classic"...

1920s Loewe "Elton" with Sterling Band--The Puzzles Posed by a Not So Benign Century of Use

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) Periodically (over the past dozen years) the riddles of my only vintage Loewe (acquired for a modest sum on Ebay) have nagged at me. The pipe is clearly a Loewe of the Haymarket era that began decently in life. That much is clear. But decades...

Brooklyn--A Room with a View, of One's Own, on the Waterfront

No argument whatsoever with either of you with regard to the "real world." In the pipe world though--and particularly with respect to Dunhill in its heyday-- what a guy. For myself, I no longer aspire to one day having a bridge, a street, or airport, or even a local high school named after me...

Brooklyn--A Room with a View, of One's Own, on the Waterfront

Pipe Smoking While Driving a Convertible?

Exactly! The Paris store was open. But more to the point, this version of About Smoke was the "Export Edition" and has the the name, address and phone number of Dunhill's Dutch representative, M.V. Heule, Manders & Co printed on the cover.

    Aging Dunhill Tins?

NB the "speculation" took place circa 2005 (NOT the mid-90s! proofreading/scriveners error. Apologies.)

    Aging Dunhill Tins?

The London store continued to sell a variety of tobacco blended in house (sometimes referred to as "Duke Street blends") till at least the early 2000s--including Baby's Bottom and White Spot and even an alternative version of Aperitif, as well as nearly 30 others (some with fanciful names, for...

    Aging Dunhill Tins?

As it happens, I went on a serious Dunhill tin buying spree in May 2005, at just about the moment the new Orlik produced stock was reaching B&M shops. I also bought around the same time quite a few tins that had been bought and cellared between 1998 and 2000 (with date of purchase written in...

1926 Dunhill Bruyere Shape 151 restem --- Excellent Specimen, Uncommon Shape

Absolutely beautiful work, and what an astonishing good eye you clearly have for the graceful line that that larger Dunhill bents can have (and what a glorious ending to pappymac's Dunhill Replacement Stem Needed thread). When John Loring was still alive (in the early-mid aughts), I used to...

Brooklyn--A Room with a View, of One's Own, on the Waterfront

In due course, it will be a pleasure to do so--though I cannot claim to own anything that will quicken the pulse, inspire awe, or incite jealousy. Indeed, I am thoroughly humbled by what I've seen posted here by members-- including John Loring grade beauties, photographed with skill, perfectly...
