Longest Break You've Taken from the Pipe

17 years. I got back into puffing about a couple of years ago (and still end up smoking a pipe pretty much on the QT because I get tired of the family grousing about it).

Boy Oh Boy Pipe Tobacco The Affordable Luxury

Like a lot of disposable-income enthusiasms, pipe smoking can cost a hell of a lot of money, or be done fairly frugally. It's usually a matter of perspective (considering one's basic income is up to the cost, whatever that is). I honestly shudder to think what my dad has spent on season...

Greetings All and Sundry from the Pacific NW!

Have you ever been through the Valley of the Giants, near Siletz? It's a humbling thought, to wander through that area, and think that many thousands of acres of Oregon and Washington were once covered as thickly with trees as large at that.

Greetings All and Sundry from the Pacific NW!

The PNW is beautiful, and is a really great country to ramble in - hiking up the Cascades or through the Coastal Range and looking down into those green valleys or down at the coast is something of a spiritual experience.

Greetings All and Sundry from the Pacific NW!

I've been to Poulsbo, but didn't know about the Cargo Hold! It's a very pleasant town - I'll have to check out their shop sometime. Thanks for the tip!

    Legends v Washington Cobs

I like the MM Missouri Prides, fairly small though they may be - they're delivered unfinished, and smoke like champs.

    Hello from Switzerland!

Welcome from the Pacific NW! Switzerland is a lovely country. I first hiked the lower Alps back in the early '90s. An unforgettable experience.

    LUNTING?

I agree. I probably couldn't chew gum and walk at the same time anyway, much less puff a bowlful of baccy. But since I don't get to do it very often, I sit on my duff while I puff.

A Little Lesson in Comparative Evaluation...

Aha - I didn't catch that it has a dash of perique (a flavor I kinda like in fairly small amounts).

Newminster No. 400 is my usual smoke. I've never tried the Orlik Golden Sliced. @BROBS , do you find them to be pretty similar?

A little dab will certainly do ya!

A Little Lesson in Comparative Evaluation...

Damned good advice. And most of all - take your time. I used to rush through every new tobacco I bought, without sitting with the stuff, eager to jump to the next experience.

A Little Lesson in Comparative Evaluation...

And there's something also to be said for finding a combination of pipe and tobacco that works for you on a regular basis!

A Little Lesson in Comparative Evaluation...

Absolutely. Since getting back into puffing, I've shown more restraint than I would have when I was into pipes years ago, and a lot of that is the perspective one gets with some time passing. When I get a little bleary with something, a break from it, or a small change in routine will almost...

    Vulcanite Stems

I love ebonite and cumberland stems - prefer them with almost any pipe at all!

    Vulcanite Stems

Is it a British pipe marque? British manufacturing firms were using vulcanite on industrial fittings by the late 1800s, I believe, so it's certainly possible.

    Post-Smoking Mouth Care

Honey crisp apples are good too! Crunchy and sweet enough.

A Little Lesson in Comparative Evaluation...

This weekend, I went out for a hike with an old buddy of mine who never gave up pipe smoking like I did. I brought along a Missouri Meerschaum Pride cob, and he offered to bring along a baccy pouch or two. When we had arrived at a good resting place, he brought out a pouch of the venerable old...

    Post-Smoking Mouth Care

I'll often sip a little cranberry juice or grapefruit juice after I smoke, or eat some citrus. The tang of the somewhat sharper juices or fruits seem to do a nice job of palate cleansing.

Greetings All and Sundry from the Pacific NW!

We don't want to miss this area's best time of year - spring! Spring is mighty fine piping weather here...gentle breezes, low humidity, clear skies with dramatic cloud formations blowing in from the coast, and beautiful sunsets.
