***What Are You Smoking, July 2024?***

Motzek Strang, which Jim once called "the best durn tobacco made", until it wasn't. Apparently Herr Motzek sold his business and the new guy screwed it up I guess. Sound familiar ? Smoking it in a Chacom morta with some Kirkland Small Batch Bourbon on the rocks. Not bad for $20 a liter. I've had...

    Show Off Your Barlings Here

Thank you for all this info. The stem has no markings and I have no idea if it's even original. It does have some deep tooth marks, so I would like to have a replacement made for everyday smoking. I'll try to take some better photos when I have more time.

    Show Off Your Barlings Here

Thanks for the info. I do not see an R before the Barling name. Regardless of its market value, for me it is the sentimental value of smoking a pipe that belonged to a good friend. I will think of him every time I smoke it.

Show Us Your Knife (And Pipe)

I lost my first Spyderco after having it for maybe 25 years, a Delica with a pink handle I used for fishing. I figured if I drop it in the stream I at least might see it. These two were the next I purchased. A pair of Pro Venators I got at the seconds sale probably mid 90's, but I'm pretty hazy...

    Show Off Your Barlings Here

A few months ago a fellow pipe smoker passed away and his family asked his best friend to distribute his pipe collection among his close friends. I wound up with four pipes, among them was this Barlings. The nomenclature is fairly hard to read, nearly worn off. Starting on the left it reads...

What's Your 4th of July, 2024 Food Lineup?

Have three racks of St. Louis ribs hitting the pit Saturday. My guests will bring the rest of the meal. Being the pit man has its advantages. ;)

I'm assuming you mean for an individual. I think for companies like Spyderco it's probably not a problem given their large vacuum ovens where they can precisely control the heat treat. Again, my assumptions are that of a largely uninformed consumer.

The patent for D2 was filed in June of 1927. It's been the go to for almost 100 years. But your point is well taken. We knife guys suffer from a glut of high end steels these days, Magnacut being the darling of the moment. I have Spyderco Mules in M398,AEBL and K294. I don't have enough...

I'm not so sure. I think on low end knives people perceive it as better than the typical budget steels. With a very good heat treat it seems to punch above its weight. VG-10 comes to mind. What other steels do you prefer in the low/mid range ?

2003 Christmas Cheer in a Wiley Old Oak. For some reason this is a Santa pipe to me, so I smoke only CC in it.

And a talented carver ! Who knew ? rotf For those in the dark, Anthony is an up and coming carver here in the Denver metro area. Now that he's been on the Pipes Magazine Radio Show, it's time I give him credit when I say "my friend replaced the stem for me" or "my friend refinished this pipe...

That pipe deserved something special, so I dipped in to my dwindling stash of Pelican. After I finish this tin I only have two more left. :(

It's fixed blade Friday, get with your own program ! Here is the companion to the Old Timer Deer Slayer from last week, a Schrade 152, commonly known as the Sharpfinger. Pipe is a Refbjerg Straight Grain, hemmin and hawin about what to put in it.

    Your First Pipe

Being a young woodworker I decided to make my first pipe because, you know, how hard could it be ? Shaped the stummel and sent it out to get a stem. Silly me, I drilled the chamber with a Forstner bit, which produces a flat bottomed holed. DOH ! Still smokes fine. Was a perfect straight grain...
