How many bowls a day do you smoke?

Often only one bowl a day, but I take quite a few days off. Occasionally I have been known to smoke two or three, but then I start to crave it and I start to get diminishing returns on the flavour because it wrecks my tastebuds so easily. I just went two weeks without smoking anything and it...

Pipe Storage, Stem Up or Stem Down and Why

I've always gone stem up to keep any residuals out of the mouthpiece.

Who likes to smoke through one blend at a time?

I love and hate TobaccoReviews for the very same reason. I feel it is like some crazy tobacco scripture that needs to be reinterpreted over and over again. There are even kernels of truth in those bad reviews, but you'll probably need to read them a couple times over the span of many months...

Who likes to smoke through one blend at a time?

I think the initial palate shock of a new blend has led to thousands of bad tobacco reviews. If you gave each blend a few bowls, nevermind a whole tin, then the reviews would be much more accurate and consistent. (People also take for granted that they are trying a new blend when they are sick...

Who likes to smoke through one blend at a time?

Who likes to smoke one blend at a time? I presume that most of us only smoke one pipe at a time, but that's not what I mean... I'm wondering who likes to smoke through an entire tin without interruption, staying faithful to the one blend? Okay, that's strict. So maybe a couple "variety" smokes...

    another new pipe smoker!

If you are an infrequent smoker, cake will take awhile to build. If you smoke the same pipe frequently, then cake will be a nuisance that you don't want to hurry along. You need some cake, but definitely not more than the nickel or dime's worth. Some blends seem to build it faster than others...

    First time pipe smoker

Making your own corn cob pipe is probably more trouble than it is worth. It will take you a lot of time, it will probably cost your more money (or sweat) than it would take to pay for said MM cob, and most likely it will be inferior due to the special strain of corn that they use to provide...

    Sour Kaywoody

I use vodka as a rule, but I have occasionally dabbled with the others. It does add a very fleeting flavour, but its not much to talk about. After the first part of one bowl, it's gone. The only downside, perhaps, is that some of the spirits will impart some residual sugars. Dark rum, for one...

Roth, I can't see these overproof and/or grain alcohols being too pricey in the United States, but in other places they are taxed to the hilt to limit consumption. That's why I used the regular 40% spirits, though they are not ideal. Still, they evaporate fast enough for my purposes.

    Cherry Blends

Ghost I never got much of a real cherry taste myself, but I agree with you that it definitely requires its own pipe and it definitely needs a lot of drying time. It is a SOB to get lit... I'm a firm believer that ALL blends belong in a pipe devoted to their own respective style. Virginias belong...

I think I want a cob very soon!!

My bad, I heard they weren't able to manufacture the large ones anymore this year. They are out of stock at my usual sources so for my purposes they are gone, anyway. Luckily I don't need anymore at the moment. You can get a nice long smoke from a Country Gentleman. I got sick of the smaller...

Like most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Vaboatbuilder, you should look into getting some obsidian stem oil to keep the vulcanite bit in good condition. I've heard of people using olive oil and other substances, so if you want a cheaper alternative then you can do a bit...

    Cherry Blends

He may love the stuff, it all depends on what he expects. Perhaps I was expecting a medicinal "Halls" cough drop cherry like I was used to from the Captain Black. Instead, Top Black Cherry is more of a sweet cherry liqueur taste. It is like a cherry dessert instead of a "synthesized" cherry...

    Cherry Blends

I used to smoke Captain Black Cherry little cigars before I knew any better; I don't know if that tastes anything like the pipe tobacco... Top Black Cherry is the only blend that I ever threw up from after smoking. I think I had food poisoning, but the negative connotations remain. I gag when I...

    Sour Kaywoody

There are various methods involving soaking, sanding, and buffing but I will leave the explanation to others who are better versed in pipe restoration. There are also oils you can apply as a preventative measure, but that won't help vaboatbuilder until after he's cleaned off the oxidation from...

I think I want a cob very soon!!

I personally don't care for the idea of the grab bag, cheap though they may be... I've got a fleet of Country Gentlemen cobs, 12 or 13, I can't remember. I have tried other models but they were not really to my liking. I smoked the hell out of them and threw them out. Country Gents were perfect...

Yeah I didn't know if that was oxidation or what. I can see it's discoloured. Fix that and give up the Malibu and see how it tastes afterwards...

Zig Zag Pipe Tobacco--I think we have hit rock bottom here!

Unfortunately, the uptick in high-end tobacco consumption is attracting even more attention from lawmakers starved for lack of revenue. Not to mention all of the antis who drop the "somebody please think of the children" defense whenever it is noted that there is growth in these segments...

    Sour Kaywoody

Substitute 151 for the Malibu. As Roth notes, Malibu is not a good solution for pipes. It is full of sugar and artificial flavouring, not to mention that it is only 20% alcohol. Rum, whiskey, brandy, or vodka would be better for your purposes. (Overproof or grain alcohols are better, but the...
