    A & C Petersen Tobaccos Still Available?

You are smoking the good stuff, then, because Cope's Escudo is quite a bit older than A&C Petersen. You will only find the STG Escudo at the major etailers - it has been that way for a number of years. The transition dates are before my time, but consider yourself fortunate to have such old...

"Clean and Ready To Smoke" Rant and Warning

numbersix, I did not give the seller in question a bad review - in fact I gave them full marks because I had ordered three pipes and the other two were clean and in good shape considering that they were fairly low end pipes. Unfortunately, however, in my haste I did not inspect the third one...

"Clean and Ready To Smoke" Rant and Warning

That was one of the first things I learned about estate pipes - "clean" and "ready to smoke" are relative terms. One of my first pipes had a horrendous latakia ghost and was full of filth despite the fact that it came from a popular eBay restorer who came highly recommmeded to me. I see the...

    A & C Petersen Tobaccos Still Available?

Escudo is made by STG, aka Orlik. Numerous etailers still list it under A&C Petersen - I don't mind because it makes it easier to find.

EBAY: Lessons Learned and How Not to Get Burned

Yeah that is actually a horrific abuse of Photoshop. They need to learn how to use the program...

    Shawshank Redemption.

I have also seen the Shawshank Redemption 10 or 12 times. I usually hate to watch movies more than once or twice so that is quite remarkable for me.

    A & C Petersen Tobaccos Still Available?

I believe they were afraid of liability in future Big Tobacco lawsuits in the litigious US of A... I have read something to that effect, though I must admit I am too lazy to find supporting documentation. I will agree, though, that it is quite a shame that we cannot obtain many marvelous...

Who Would Win in a Cage Fight? Captain Black or Prince Albert?

I have read that anecdote in several books. I am certain that it's present in Tobacco by Iain Gately. Whether he said it or not, Victoria was decidedly an anti and Edward was a lover of fine tobacco so there is definitely truth in the story. zonomo, I am surprised as hell that you can't find...

Ordering From UK Retailers / Mick McQuaid Plug

I would love to have that Mick McQuaid statue. That would be great to put up at the end of a bar... By the way, from what I've read it sounds like procuring UK tobaccos can be done, but it is definitely a huge hassle and the prices will be more than double what you are used to paying. A trip to...

Snagged a New Mastro De Paja off Ebay

$200 seems about average for many Mastro de Paja pipes. I don't know what this one is worth, but it is definitely worth $82 by any measure... Congrats.

    Balkans?

It is a marketing term and there are no legal guidelines so it means whatever its blenders want it to mean... Go on a beer forum and ask the question: what is the difference between porter and stout? If you want to pick nits, there is no major difference - producers, however, have created a...

    Changing Filters

I used Medico filters in my cobs on two occasions because I forgot to remove them from a new pipe. I am not a fan... They make the stem smell and leave behind disgusting tar flavours.

Where Does Everyone "Cellar" Their Tobacco

Closet, drawer, cabinet, tupperware container, wooden box - just about anywhere as long as the temperature is relatively constant and not too hot or cold. Also keep in mind the humidity level so as to preserve the metal tins and jar covers. (Oh, and keep them in darkness if at all possible)

    Canadian

What isn't covered by your current rotation? People say that certain blends smoke better in certain pipes but that is irrelevant if you don't like the tobacco in question. +1 uber

    Price Hike?

As I have said in the past, taxes are not the only worry: -Ban of all online tobacco sales. -Ban of all tobacco flavouring agents. (except for the exemptions they'll give the cigarette manufacturers) -Ban of tobacco displays and institution of plain packaging and warning labels. This is...

"Duh" Tip for Those Who Use Matches

Thanks for the story, tenn. I have never used a pipe lighter and I probably will not start because I haven't seen the need. Sure it might be a little more convenient but procuring matches is definitely easier in the long run.

    I Think I Made a New Discovery

The fact that you don't like those two tobaccos is probably an indictment of the blenders rather than the leaf, IMO. There are hundreds of blends readily available out there and nobody likes them all... I agree with rmbittner, invest another $10 at least into a well-reviewed oriental blend with...

    I Think I Made a New Discovery

Have you smoked other latakia blends before? I would place the blame on latakia before I pointed a finger at orientals in general. (Latakia is a fire-cured oriental, but it is radically different than its forebears) Do you get a lingering ashiness in your mouth after smoking those blends? That...

"Duh" Tip for Those Who Use Matches

I go through small wooden matches like crazy - it usually takes me quite a few to get the tobacco burning the way it should. I will have to look into getting some cigar matches...

    History of Latakia Blends

I seem to have misread your post, piper. My apologies. While I have no idea of what was being smoked in South Africa in the 1890s, I would think that soldiers in the colonies would only be smoking latakia if it was popular/prevalent in the mother country and not the other way around... (Pure...
