What Are You Smoking? *March 2013*

Beginner Here: When to "Tamp" and How to Store...

I always try to combat this by smoking aged stock ASAP but it is not always possible - and sometimes us mortals forget... It isn't always a dramatic decline but I'm willing to bet that dollars to donuts you are better off smoking the stuff as soon as you can.

Beginner Here: When to "Tamp" and How to Store...

I agree that it "stops dead" each time you open the jar but my point - whether it was clear or not - is that the process will not always start over again. Sometimes by opening the jar, from what I have read, you disrupt things enough to end the perceivable aging process altogether. This is...

    What's Your Favourite Cherry Blend

I have heard that the codger burley cherry blends such as Middleton Cherry have little to no cherry flavour, though they may have some aroma. This is all heresay, however, so I defer to others with more experience... I also hear that Captain Black Cherry is very medicinal. I found Gawith...

    Cleaning Jars For Storage

I used to clean my new jars. Now I don't. It hasn't killed me yet, nor has it ruined any tobacco. So far, so good... I would definitely replace the lids, though, because they are too cheap to risk sacrificing your tobacco's flavour.

    Puffing Incognito -

I think smoking hot is the real death knell for latakia-based tobaccos. With Virginias, it can be a blessing or a curse. I find that some VA tobaccos respond well to an increased temperature, but for the most part the result will be heat and harshness. Old leathertongues among us, though, might...

Beginner Here: When to "Tamp" and How to Store...

If you plan to age tobacco, keep separate aging jars. Opening your jars repeatedly interrupts (and sometimes ends) the aging process. Jars are relatively cheap and they are quite reusable so it doesn't pay to skimp... Tamp - lightly - whenever your tobacco expands a fair distance away from the...

    Puffing Incognito -

I have been smoking a pipe for several years now. You will always be refining your techniques. If you are so lucky as to smoke a pipe for 40, 50, 60 years - you will still probably learn something new upon occasion. There is a lot about pipe smoking that is misunderstood...

    Having Taste Issues

Smoking your pipes indiscriminately is a guaranteed way to get modest returns. If you dedicate them to one style or another, you will get greater clarity of flavour... I would encourage pipe smokers to try straight Virginia blends as soon as they get a grasp of the basics of pipe smoking. The...

    UK TAD List & Justification.

I would be very content with the current UK selection of tobaccos. Perhaps it does not have the breadth of the American offerings, but they scream quality. From the Gawiths to the OTCs, there is something for everyone... As for the repeal of those credit card restrictions - don't hold your breath...

    Coffee And Smoking...

punk, Start out with smaller cups and a slower drinking/smoking pace OR try drinking your coffee shortly after the fact until you get used to the combined "doses". It may sound silly but as someone who is sensitive to both it is not an automatic given that you can combine the two without adverse...

    Coffee And Smoking...

I like to follow up a cup of black coffee with a straight burley such as the Wessex Burley Slices. Very complimentary flavours. Straight Virginias are also an excellent choice. The sweetness really contrasts with the bitter taste of the coffee. I prefer African beans and medium to dark roasts...

    Coffee And Smoking...

Caffeine is a potent stimulant, nicotine is a potent stimulant - your story adds up, does it not? If and when your tolerance builds, that sickness will be an infrequent occurence. Until then, you could be in for a wild ride...

That's Subcomandante Marcos, leader of the Zapatista rebels in Mexico. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subcomandante_Marcos I saw the documentary "A Place Called Chiapas" a few years ago. He's quite an enigmatic figure... Kashmir, interesting smoking strategy. I would like to be able to make it...

Burned The *Heck* Out Of My Finger

I have had a few issues with the wind blowing my tobacco away and making a monkey out of me but nothing like you have described. Yesterday, though, I mistakenly knocked a pile of ashes and dirty pipe cleaners onto my carpet. I was not amused...

    Finding Your Tobacco Preference

McClelland blends have some similarities but there should be no mistaking a Virginia blend for a latakia blend, whether by taste or by smell... mp31guitar, I am glad that you have found your "calling" when it comes to pipe tobacco. I started out with aromatics (because that's all that was...

    HGL is back

Great news to hear that Herman Lane's own blend is back in production. It's good to hear that Lane is diversifying a little from their mainstay aromatics. Thanks for listening to your customers, Leonard. +1 sam. I agree, Edgeworth would be great to have revived.

    New Generation Pipers

I think the old guard has a tendency to smoke a pipe as a habit, with a greater frequency of bowls per day. They also show greater loyalty in embracing a smaller number of blends but with greater devotion. The new generation is mostly about experimentation and variety. (Sometimes to a fault)...
