I don't think that a machined pipe could be defined free hand, maybe free shape if the shape is not ordinary.Otherwise how we could define a fully hand made pipe? How to wax a rusticated pipe?
The most part of rusticated pipes have a shellac finish so no wax is needed otherwise the deep parts of rustication will come opaque , a tissue with a light natural oil will help Maurizio- pentangle

There's a lot of confusion about free hand pipes. A Grabow of course can't be a free hand for 30$ or not? 8O Probably the confusion is between free shape and free hand.Also Nording that is one major brand nowadays cant produce real free hand if not in special series for over 300-400$. "very nice grain on that pipe" I bought many plateau from calabria these days and all seems to have a quality like that, i whould recommemd to try to find Calabrian briar and not the pre-drilled ebauchons availables on internet if you want to carve a great pipe Maurizio -
