    Favorite Pipe Smoking Musician

In recognition of the many high-school commencement exercises happening this week in wilds of Northern Virginia, here is Little Eddie Elgar, the (admittedly fine) trio of whose Pomp and Circumstance (the original P&C?) March No. 1 ("The Land of Hope and Glory" -- but the words came later)...

    Recommendations for Wagner?

Wagner might have agreed with you: according to one story, "Beethoven" was his last word. Wagner transcribed Beethoven's ninth symphony for piano and his own Symphony in C sounds remarkably like Beethoven. YMMV, as they say. I can't go a week without some Wagner. Smoke what you like... I...

Is that Ballard Berkeley (the Major) from Fawlty Towers?

***What Are You Smoking *** (June 2014)

I don't care if it was 88 degrees with 84% humidity today, I'm having my favorite winter combination of Star of the East flake in a big Boswell with a glass of Laphroaig 10-year. So there, mother nature.

    Cigars as pipe tobacco

I don't think I'll try it anytime soon.

    Cigars as pipe tobacco

According to this site, P.G. Wodehouse preferred crumbing cigars into his pipe to using pipe-tobacco. This information is apparently from Robert McCrum's Wodehouse: A Life.

    Aromatics that have dried out

My father has done this for years, but people on the forum and elsewhere caution that this may promote the growth of mold or other nasty things. Has that happened to you?

    Cigrmaster Is Back

Excellent - glad to see this! (Also glad to see the same ol' Peck. Back to normal...)

    East Tennessee

I've always wondered why Sidetrack Tobacco in Bristol or Shamrock in Johnson City didn't sponsor a club. (It's been years since I've been in either, and maybe they're more cigar-oriented than I remember, though.)

    GH&Co Ennerdale Flake

Pitchfork, do you smoke both Ennerdale and Grasmere in the same pipe? Do the ghosts compete with each other? (I like both blends but have kept them separate.)

    Louis Armstrong Fans, A Shrine

I will plug Terry Teachout's fantastic biography of Armstrong, released a couple of years ago, called Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong. It is extremely well-written, engaging, and a joy to read. It's not too technical for the non-musician and is one of the best books of its kind I have ever...

Washington Post Ad Has A Pipe

The ad is for Arena Stage's upcoming production of Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children. What surprised me was that this picture appears on the first page of the Washington Post Magazine. The horror! A pipe-smoking woman in an ad in the Post! How'd they let that one through? (Maybe...
