What Time of Day do you Enjoy your Pipe the Most?

Evenings in the spring/ summer, days in the late fall/winter. This is my first year of pipe smoking, and as the weather gets cold at night, I'm finding the need to switch to daytime. Bonus: just discovered the joy of coffee & a smoke together for the first time!

    Duke Albert/Prince Andrew

I've long wanted to try the famed Prince Albert, but I could never bring myself to commit to 14 oz. of any tobacco that I don't know if I'll even enjoy. So I decided to try the match blend Duke Albert (and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that Hearth & Home's Prince Andrew is...

    Pipe Cleaners?

Guess I'm in the minority, but I can't abide BJ Longs. Too thin, not absorbent enough, and on many of them, the metal core pokes out too far and scrapes the inside of my stem (especially curved ones!). Now Brigham... that's a nice fluffy pipe cleaner! Never any issues with them.

    Handling Moisture?

I had this same issue once, and keeping a pipe cleaner handy and running it through the stem periodically totally solved the problem. It isn't something that you need to do constantly, however. Personally, I only need to do this twice during a smoke: at about 1/3rd of the way through the bowl...

    Rubber Stem protectors

I'm not a clencher specifically because I can't find comfort with or without the softy bits. With a bare stem, it's too hard to be comfortable on my teeth for long. With the softy bits, I find they force my mouth open wider, and I can't form a good seal around the stem with my lips (or it's...

    Sir Walter Raleigh Regular

The recent review of the aromatic version of SWR made me want to try my hand at the original. And so, I give you: Sir Walter Raleigh: Blend: Burley Tin note: Predominantly bread notes. With a bit of raisins. Raisin bread, basically; just not as sweet. Impressions: Not really an...

    Is Tongue Bite Over Hyped?

I've found that most aromatics bite the hell out of my tongue; no matter how slowly I smoke them. It's one of the reasons I gravitated away from them. Nice room note, but little actual taste, and lots of bite. Haven't really had a problem with any non-aromatics, including Virginias, provided I...

All of My Pipes Are Smoking Better Lately

This was a HUGE revelation for me as well. People often talk about methods to pack a pipe, as if it's always done the same way. But I too found that the cut and brand of tobacco, as well as a particular pipe, can make a massive difference in how I pack it. Eventually, you get to know your...

    Calling All Hobbyists

Came for the ritual; stayed for the nicotine :) . Bonus points for the childhood memory of pipe smoke that lingered in my mind over the years, and always conjured peaceful memories and pleasant associations.

What's the worst blend you've tried?

At this point, probably Half and Half. That cardamom/coriander topping they put in there never tastes right. It's like the world's blandest curry... Also Balkan Supreme. It tasted like a cross between an old argyle sweater and a library book.

Edward G. Robinson blend in an H.I.S. billard.

Bits of Tobacco Fused to Bowl?

After several smokes in my new-ish pipes, I'm noticing that tiny bits of tobacco are basically fused to the side of the bowl. I give the bowl my usual cleaning (a quick wipe with a folded up pipe cleaner, and sometimes another paper towel wipe). But still a few bits remain attached. Even a...

Presbyterian out of my Peterson Dracula apple. The tobaccos of the night... what music they make!

***What Are You Smoking, September 2021?***

Sir Walter Raleigh original out of a Rossi prince. This might be my favorite of the OTC blends I've had yet. Simple and tasty, I can see why many old timers were able to smoke this all day long.

Where to Buy OTCs Over an Actual Counter?

I realize this may be highly region-dependent, but I never see OTC/codger brands (or as one poster here called them, "American classics", which is a term I appreciate) for sale in a brick & mortar stores. Drugstores stopped carrying them. Any high-end tobacconists I've been to, if they have...

***What Are You Smoking, September 2021?***

My Mixture 965 in a MM cob. First time smoking this, and it's fantastic - like a wine with well-balanced tannins; a pinot noir or a tempranillo. I didn't think I was an English kind of guy, but this one totally changed my mind.

    Cold Beverages Burning!

I'm starting to think I may also be smoking a bit too hot, honestly. I don't get bite during the smoke, but the affect of beverages lead me to think I might be irritating my tongue without realizing it.
