    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

Great topic. I use Captain Morgan spiced rum to wipe the mouth piece and clean airway after each smoke. Leaves a great flavor for the first few minutes of the smoke, then disappates.

    Commission question

Where I think it's tough is if you ask for a "billiard like the one you made for xyz," but it ends up different enough that it's bordering on being more of maybe an apple or pot.

    Commission question

Agreed. Expecting an exact copy of something is bound to leave someone unsatisfied. That's what factories are for.

    Commission question

Yeah, I know these artisans work hard and aren't getting rich, so I hesitate to ask for a redo.

    Commission question

I sent a picture of one of his previous pipes and said I want a pipe like that with the same shape. Probably my fault for not saying "as close to that as you can do." But like Hawkeye said, it could be that the pic is just how it looks at THAT stage. I didn't know prepaying wasn't standard...

    Commission question

I arranged and prepaid for a custom pipe commission. I had sent the maker a picture of one of his previous pipes and wanted one similar. Later he sent me a picture of the shaped stummel. It looks well executed and I know I can't expect it to be identical, but the shape is a bit off from the...

    Evening Pipes and Sleep

Could just be getting older. My sleep became much worse as I got older, and that's pretty common. I found being consistent with my workouts helped quite a bit, and no screens at least 1 hour before bed.

Pipes Keep Slipping Out of Clench

I find that the stem material matters a lot. I have a Vauen with an acrylic stem so hard and slick that I can’t clench. But vulcanite or cumberland have a bit more give and hold better. Also the thinner the better. I doubt I’ll ever buy another pipe with acrylic.

"Breaking In" A Briar Pipe? Fact or Fiction?

I think there is something to it, but it depends on the smoker and the pipe. I suspect a few things are going on with ‘breaking in’ 1. The briar was not well aged, and smoking it over a few months is actually ‘curing’ it. 2. Forming a cake sometimes improves the performance 3. The wood is no...

    English Aromatic/Aro English Suggestions?

Sutliff Eastfarthing. Latakia, vanilla. First half tastes a little cheap, second half melds beautifully and deliciously. I love crossovers and this is my favorite.

Your biggest Surprise in Pipe Smoking?

I was recently surprised by how much better a well drilled and aged artisan pipe smokes, compared to my factory pipes. I always enjoyed my Stanwells, but recently got an ‘Old Briar’ from Bruno Nuttens. It was so beautiful I had to have it. Suddenly I understood what people mean when they say a...

    Filtered Pipes

For me, yes for filter with aromatics = dry, less bite. For English and Virginia based, no filter means crisper flavors.
