    Resealing an Opened Tin

[All you need is mason jars, in my opinion.] No question mason jar is the way to go for long term/cellaring storage. However when dealing with opening tins keeping in tin is more convenient as it save space compared to mason jars and make easier to find the different opened tobaccos.

    Resealing an Opened Tin

[ don't smoke too much and I like to use different tobaccos so I have the issue of how to keep fresh the tobacco once a tin is opened. I am aware the best way should be using mason jars but for space saving I prefer keeping the tobacco in the original tin. So I figure out to “reseal” in some way...

    Aged FVF, wow

I was not very impressed with a fresh FVF sample I got last year so I put it in the jar. Today 1 year later I gave it another try. It started to develop the famous crystals, I properly dried and wow it was totally different. Mellow, delicious creamy smoke for 90 minutes in a Lepeltier clay...

    Olive Wood Pipe

[Tom Spanu made great pipes and passed away last year so what you will see is the last of his stock] Tom Spanu son Massimiliano was working with his father and he is continuing the shop. It looks he is continuing the tradition of his father.

    Sad End To Clay Pipe

[I've always wanted a clay, but don't want a pipe I can't hold by the bowl when I'm not clenching.] Try a Lepeltier clay pipe. They have double walls with interspace in between and they don't get hot, you can definitely hold them as long as you want.

    Pesaro and Mastro de Paja

[Alberto taught me a better way of keeping my pipe lit (making much use of the tamper)] Now we are all interested to have shared this trick.

    Obligatory Non-Political Thread

[Burn the Prince and be damned the Monarchy, support separation of Powers and smoke a variety] While smoking the Prince grab the rifle to overthrow the government (starting from the nanny ones) shut down the agencies (starting from the FDA and its regulations) and reinstall freedom of people...

    Obligatory Non-Political Thread

[But seriously, why is Prince Albert better in pouches than cans?] Because the government want to limit people choices and secretely add a bad sauce called social engeneering to the can version to make it bad. Let's stand up for freedom of the Prince in any form, let's stand up for Monarchy...

    Obligatory Non-Political Thread

[When do we overthrow the government?] When we'll be able to wake up the people anesthetized and hypnotized by the government through social engineering. Let's start with mandatory replacing the marijuana with tobacco. Then move on cannibalism and sodomy (of the government).

    Removing Ash at mid bowl

[that is a good time to take your finger or tamper and break off the unburned tobaccos from the side wall to fill in the cavity where the ash used to be for a fresh new smoke.] That's absolutely what I found, removing the ash midway and filling the hole in the mid of the bowl with the tobacco on...

Shelf life of an open tin

I don't like to jar so to keep the tobacco fresh after I open the tin I put a double aluminum foil under the cover and I seal the tin with electric tape. The tobacco stay fresh this way very well.

    Packing Lighter & Smoking Drier

I found me too that drying and packing light makes a big difference. About packing light I found the best way to pack is what I call the palm method. I put some tobacco in the palm of the hand and then I swirl the bowl over it. Just try and you will see the bowl while moving over the palm...

    Center or periphery

Ok, this is the question, when you light the bowl you light just the center of it or all the surface? Reason being if found if I try to light the entire surface of the bowl no matter what I use to light, matches or lighters, the rim of the bowl tends to be charred. So should be just lighted...

    Matching Pipe to Tobacco

For the most I would say there is no rigid rule and you can use any tobacco in any pipe. Said that there are few things which can be considered in matching tobacco with a pipe. First of all the more complex is the blend (in other way the more tobacco components there are) the more you might...

To cake or not to cake?

After having used corn cob and then clay (Lepeltier) pipes I am going to break in my first briar one. I understand pretty well all the break in process for briars but I have one question. I understand the carbonization layer is what is protecting the pipe from burning and that that layer...

    Packing and Lighting Help

This is what I found useful as a beginner: 1. Dry the tobacco more than you think. It varies from blend to blend but for ribbon cut I dry 1-2 hours, for flake even overnight. 2. Create an air pocket at the end of the bowl. I found very easy to accomplish this using brass pipe screens (it...

What a difference dry tobacco makes!!

[Every blend has its moisture related sweet spot. Most, but not all, really benefit from being smoked very dry.] Yes, true. I think not all but most benefit from drying more or less before smoking. Different issue is the wetness when packed in the tin because I think wet tobacco can...

What a difference dry tobacco makes!!

After reading many threads talking about the benefits of drying tobacco I started drying more and more the tobacco taking it out from the tin at increasing times before smoking. Today I increased more the drying time of Squadron Leader leaving the amount to be smoked in a plate for 2 hours to...

Syrian Latakia Is Gone ... Forever

[I offer my opinion from smoking a lot of 3 Oaks Syrian and HH Vintage Syrian. My most recent tin of HH Vintage Syrian does not taste like pure Syrian latakia. It has the sharper taste of Cyprian latakia.] I cannot comment about pre 2014 HH Vintage Syrian but yes, they taste different from 3...

Syrian Latakia Is Gone ... Forever

[The question is what is the cutting time HH Vintage Syrian had no more Syrian, 2017,2016,2015 or when? The question is, whether HH Vintage Syrian has been "cut" at all. Unsubstantiated claims are simply that, unsubstantiated claims. Personally, I don't really care, as my stocks are all 5-6...
