    Ok guys thanks for all that. I'm convinced it's not a stinger so I'll list it on eBay over the weekend and let the market decide. If I get any more weir and wonderful pipes I'll be back on the forum

    As promised here are the images of the "dagger" removed from the shaft. as you can see it's made in one piece. I wonder why the three holes are there, maybe like the grooves on a sword, makes it easier to get out!! The image in the middle is a confirmed Dr Plum dagger pipe.

    Wow, thanks for all this, certainly food for thought. Going forward I think I've concluded that this is a pipe dagger. The only issue would be if Hardcastle, before 1936, ever fitted stingers like this to their pipes? If the didn't them my reasoning for thinking it's authentic is as follows...
