    Solani Aged Burley Flake

ABF 656 is good stuff. I think the only two tins I have of the same tobacco were bought by accident (Windjammer, if I recall). I was telling a friend I had maybe 35 blends. After counting I had 90. Oh my. Had to create a Word doc with my ever-changing personal ratings. Fun hobby.

Building Your Cellar - Things To Consider

I get the distinction between topping and casing, though admittedly not in the sense of seeing it done, but surely as it is described by blenders. What I was trying to get at is how the definitions get fuzzy at the edges. Some examples? MacBaren’s Scottish Mixture is said, by some, to be an...

    Jim's Wesley's Blends Reviews.

Great reviews of the various offerings. My always preference is for reviews to compare ‘this to that’ — one newly reviewed blend to well-known blends. Why? Because many people can’t ‘taste’ the woodsy, floral, etc. descriptors. That said, if you live in the USA, there are only a few large...

Building Your Cellar - Things To Consider

Thanks to the OP for posting this discussion thread! And many thanks to SBC for collating categories of pipe tobacco. I find myself drawn to categories so I can somewhat safely compare A to B to C. I was telling a friend I might have collected 35 tobaccos and was feeling like I was over doing...

Thanks. I check TobaccoReviews often but wish people would compare this one to another one. The flavors one senses are ephemeral — but I know people are trying to help.

I renewed my interest in pipe smoking a year or so ago. I have a wide taste palate and keep buying new blends. This process feels a bit like an addiction. Before retirement I was a shrink. I devised a simple category-based Word doc and went to all the tins and baggies which I had already...

Key Byron’s Morning Burley is also excellent.

Cherry Pipe Tobacco by Smoker Friendly

I’d agree if Jim’s reviews tended to be nuanced. What I get is the same phraseology over and over. Since we are all different, an English is not an English. I had a supposed Lat forward this morning that felt like the Lat was in the deep background, but that’s not what the reviewer said — yes...

Cherry Pipe Tobacco by Smoker Friendly

Maybe, but Jim’s reviews often sound like they are cut and paste, the same phrases over and over. Like cue cards for VA and Burley etc. I don’t get a feel off his reviews; not a lot of heart. What I want from a review isn’t a long list of what someone says they taste or smell like some pro wine...

    Which Luxury Lighter?

The other main advantage of a Zippo is that they are usually available anywhere. If one tries to bring a nice lighter onto an airplane chances are good you’ve just donated it to TSA. So I forego that and head to a confirmation store at destination.

    Shipping Costs for Pipes

The point of my original post was not to ask how much people are charged for shipping, and I did not misunderstand the obvious that distance is related to cost. What I was asking is, where is that sweet spot? It’s why I mentioned a $114 cost for a pipe, say a Savinelli. Or say a meerschaum from...

    Shipping Costs for Pipes

I’m curious to know what folk think is ‘too much’ to pay for shipping costs for a pipe? I’ve purchased from a number of the well-known online firms, a few brick-and-mortar tobacco shops, from Ebay and from Etsy. By and large the shipping costs feel reasonable to me — so $12 or less feels...
