The point of my original post was not to ask how much people are charged for shipping, and I did not misunderstand the obvious that distance is related to cost. What I was asking is, where is that sweet spot? It’s why I mentioned a $114 cost for a pipe, say a Savinelli. Or say a meerschaum from a supplier. If the $125 pipe has a shipping cost of over $20 USD for that $125 pipe, then really that pipe is (duh) $145 plus tax, in which case I might be looking at a $140 pipe with smaller or free shipping.

I mean, if someone really wants the pipe, then the shipping cost is irrelevant. I’ve been there!

Most of the major retailers sell pipes at 80% of MSRP, whether you get the same pipe from one place to the next. But if I want a decent block meerschaum pipe at around $150, then $5.95 for shipping weighs into the purchase decision vs. $20.
Too many variables.

A lot of sellers do make pretty pennies off shipping and handling. Some I don't mind if it's professionally packaged with rigid box and well cushioned with bubble wraps. Then there are those who send their items in waffle box with few wraps of newspaper, pipe rattling inside. Priority box with bubble wrap should be around $7 - 8 US.

A number of pennies adds up to a healthy retail operation. Costs always need to be factored into an operation, all costs! Otherwise ... well that's obvious, is it not?
Of course, it is obvious. And those who overcharge without proper service will run into an obvious ends :)

The sweet spot, that is, how much you're willing to pay for any item, can only be determined by you.

No not really...

Since we are talking about online eCommerce, sure, any company can do whatever they wish, but, in eCommerce, it is common practice that at a certain price point, there is free shipping.

The only ones that aren’t following this are typically smaller mom and pop businesses, but at times, you can occasionally find them willing.

So, in eCommerce today, typically around $75-$100 is common for free shipping.

Thank you. I appreciate the honest and thoughtful response as opposed to some of the drivel.

USPS actually lowered their shipping costs, using Click & Ship.

They added the new service, Ground Advantage. It's cheaper than 1st Class and includes insurance up to $100. I find the shipping speed equal to 1st Class or Priority. Lately, Priority seems to offer no speed benefit. I can ship a pipe, in a small box, for just under $4 insured. In the past few years, via USPS 1st Class, that would have cost around $7-$8. I use Priority for pipes over $200 in value, and buy the insurance. I'm not sure how what the max value Ground Advantage would provide.

These costs and this service may only be be available via Click & Ship. I can do the labels in my home, its the way to go.

I've shipped out around 300 or so pipes in the past 10 years, using USPS, so I've seen it all.

Honestly OP
Thank you. I appreciate the honest and thoughtful response as opposed to some of the drivel.

Honestly, your OP reads like a bad Google Translate puzzle or quick-n-hasty chatGPT prompt. I assume a lot of tone and sentiment were lost in translation, which is prob why you missed the humor too.

An example of drivel. Waste of b

Case in point.
