I think Mclelland had that one nailed. :)

Things of Beauty: Antique American Pocket Watches.

Probably so. Glad yours worked out for you and I'm sure they do make fine watches. They can use any language they like in their advertising as far as I'm concerned. I just wouldn't want to wear their ads on my wrist. Since I could never afford one, it's a moot point.

    For the Start Wars Geeks

That's great! Can you tell me where you got that?

Things of Beauty: Antique American Pocket Watches.

A slightly off-topic rant. Am I the only one who takes exception to Rolex having to tell you right on the watch face that a watch is a "Superlative Chronometer"? Let alone an "Officially Certified Cosmograph"? Or, for that matter, selling for over half a million dollars? Pre-Owned Rolex...

    Help Needed for Modification.

Place a small bed of sand or rock salt on a baking tray and set the stem, with pipe cleaner inserted, on it. Put this in a 200-degree Fahrenheit oven for 3 or 4 minutes. Remove the stem and use a couple of pot holders to shape it. You'll probably need to bend it a little more than the desired...

    Improper Shipment Packing

Think of the thickness of cardboard in a plastic sandwich bag box. Now think of a NOS pipe in one of said bags and left inside said box with no other packing and shipped cross country. Amazingly it arrived intact but when I commented on the packing method on the auction site, I got a furious...

    Electric Vehicles

If you'll review these and similar studies, you'll see that those aspects were accounted for. BTW, I don't personally have an electric car, but I'm currently getting 58mpg from my hybrid.

    Electric Vehicles

Actually, electric vehicle lifetime environmental costs from all aspects, that is from construction through use and finally recycling, is about one half of that of an ICE vehicle. This is according to a study from Argonne National laboratory.

To tamp or not to tamp…

Yup, I'm lazy but that has nothing to do with creating a proper cake in the bowl. We may argue about what constitutes a correct thickness of that cake, but whether you call it a "carbon layer" or cake it's still about breaking in the pipe. I prefer a cake about the thickness of a dime. This is...

To tamp or not to tamp…

You are describing an "inverted" cake. Ream the top of the bowl a bit to even things out and concentrate on smoking to the bottom of the bowl to ensure you build a cake all the way to the heel.

Please Help ID my Grandfather's Pipe

I am not familiar with that shank and stinger style, so I can't help there. Don't use oil on the tenon, rub it with an ordinary pencil lead until you get a coating of graphite on it.

    Sirens and Howls

My daughter is training a livestock guardian dog at her farm and just yesterday posted a video of the dog howling at some sirens.

Please Help ID my Grandfather's Pipe

The metal fitting on the shank makes it unlikely this is a Savinelli. The bowl appears to be briar and the stem is almost certainly vulcanite that is heavily oxidized. Micromesh sanding may help but it's quite possible it will never be a glossy black again. If you can post pictures of the pipe...
