Turns out long before I was born my grandfather used to smoke a pie I didn't know this until my grandmother told me when she found out I started smoking a pipe. He was even use the same style pipe I tend to gravitate towards. I asked her what type of tobacco he used to smoke but unfortunately the the only thing she remembers that it smelt like cherries. I asked my uncle who is my grandfather's brother and he said it was something cherry wood he couldn't remember the brand. So my question is what do you think it might be and if it turns out it doesn't exist anymore what would be a good substitute. My only other clue that he quit sometime in the late 70s mostly cutting out unnecessary spending at the time. I hope I gave you enough the go on I would like to experience what it was like for my grandfather.

Middleton's Cherry Blend? Where did he reside? Is there a shop in the area where he might have purchased his blend? Middleton's was sold in drug stores, tobacco shops, possibly grocery stores in whatever part of the world he resided. It was a popular blend when I was in college, the 60's. It's still available. I have no idea how much today's blend resembles last century's blend. Good luck in your hunt!

He traveled a lot during his time in the Navy but he is always hung his hat here in Southeast Texas. I do have a few tobacco stores in my area but really for cigarettes more than anything but I'll give them a look

In terms of volume sold and distribution, I'd vote Middletons Cherry too. The fact that it is available today and still widely sold is another point in its favor. If that wasn't it, it's certainly a good stand-in.. The Navy Exchanges of that time would have sold it too. Now I'm not sure if the Exchanges sell tobacco at all. But at that time, I think tobacco products were deeply discounted and maybe untaxed at the Navy Exchange. I was a non-smoker in the Navy, but got some nice deals on a SLR camera and binoculars, I still have.

In addition to Middleton's, Paladin Black Cherry has been around that long as well. One of these two is likely responsible for the remembered "cherry" smell. Both are still available, and I think that Paladin Cherry is still the original goopy blend.

I call one of the stores in my area and they do have Middleton's Cherry Blend install. I was confused because every time I asked for pipe tobacco they will point me to gamblers or something those big bags of dried out tobacco. Cover them in so I'm probably going to go pick up a pouch of it tomorrow. Thank you everybody for your help. Happy piping.

Thanks I'll look into that. Yeah I'm noticing I'm not really a big fan of the drugstore brands.
I wasn't either at first. I have come back around to them recently. They make a good, no fuss morning smoke, especially with coffee. Very little needs to be thought about in regards to the mechanics of smoking them. However, I definitely grab something else when I want flavor, complexity, and/or have more time to really relax and contemplate the tobacco.
