Recently made a purchase on e bay of a quality pipe even though leary when described as grandpa’s old pipe. When it arrived heard rattling in the box, held my breath. Pipe had no protective packing. Hope it was a onetime seller. Ever happened to you?

I purchased a meerschaum from a seller in Bulgaria. When the pipe arrived it was in a soft side mailer with zero padding. The stem was attached and zero damage.

I recently purchased a pipe from an experienced seller that was extremely well protected and cased. The stem sheared during transit.

Hard to figure these things out.

But, shitty packaging puts a seller on my no buy list.

@ashdigger: Slightly off topic but have you noticed the number of really good vintage meerschaums coming out of Bulgaria? I have had two breath taking examples of rock bottom price meerschaums circa 1900 in the last few months come out of that country.

I recently purchased a new Ardor pipe from a dealer. I have not purchased a new (unsmoked) pipe in a long time and this one cost more than I usually would spend but it was (I thought) really special. When I didn’t receive my pipe by the estimated delivery date I tried to use the tracking number that had been provided only to find out that the number was not active. I contacted the seller- ultimately I found out that the pipe was broken in transit and returned to the seller. My money was refunded but I’m kind of pissed. I’m not sure if this was a packaging issue or if the Italian post is to blame?

Sounds like the Italian post was the problem. THey have a terrible reputation with eBay sellers, which is why so many excluded Italy from international sales.Don't know if it's still that way.

Sorry to hear you lost your Ardor. I am sure another will come your way. You might want to stick to an American dealer and avoid the stress of Italian postage services.
I honestly cannot remember ever getting a pipe from ebay that was not packaged properly..

Think of the thickness of cardboard in a plastic sandwich bag box. Now think of a NOS pipe in one of said bags and left inside said box with no other packing and shipped cross country. Amazingly it arrived intact but when I commented on the packing method on the auction site, I got a furious response from the seller.
