What are You Drinking? November 2024

Never a truer word said :-)

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

Charatan Black Flake in a new acquisition, a 'Little English' by the Colossus Pipe Factory, with black coffee.

Trying to Love Straight Virginias and Vapers

Yeah - not sure about exhaling through the bowl, especially with a moist flake and in cold weather. Seems to be the water vapour in your breath is likelier to dampen the tobacco in the base of the chamber and cause it to go out more often - and if you are an habitual puffer, you won't want that..

    Naming Patterns.

Personally, I don't save my dottle at all. And I bet Holmes didn't, either, after a while. As I recall, we are introduced to this and other eccentric habits of his at the beginning ('A Study In Scarlet', I think) when Holmes is clearly, like Watson, embarking on an as yet relatively...

Good point. As long as it means decent tobaccos are brought on to the market, and inferior new blends do not eclipse anything older and better in quality. That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet. If Peterson's Irish Flake were renamed Satan's Socks I'd still buy it.

Speaking of naming absurdity... this is from 1883. It seems to have had a very limited marketing life.

Or think of the four Hogwarts houses, and some of the characters... Sir, you have struck a rich vein of marketing genius.

    Naming Patterns.

What Verdi said of Wagner: "Wonderful moments, awful half-hours..." :-D As for stopping at Three Nuns in the ecclesiastical field, I think that was a wise move, as some of your suggestions, in the light of recent abuse scandals, are suggestive of the kind of leisure pursuit most of us would not...

    Naming Patterns.

Oldness (see Old Joe Gowrie Holborn and all, plus spurious dates) Orientalism Patriotism (mostly out of favour now the tobacco market is so cosmopolitan) Celticity (Scottish/Irish Flake/Cake/Cask/Mixture etc, and why is there never a Welsh brand?) I'm sure there's more...

    Antique Store Finds

Superb. Have you deciphered the hallmarks?

    Four More Cutties

I should have realised that the clue was contained in the words "Make Your Own Pipe" in the thread title... :-/ Very handsome pipes, anyhow: I hope they smoke as nicely as they look.

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

Cold afternoon out harvesting turnips and chard in the snow... best crop of turnips I ever lifted, which is something to say after this rotten growing year... left the mobile at home so I can't show you the sunset I watched on the white-capped Clee Hills turning them from pink to mauve... but...

That's a lovely rug, too, by the way - is it a Baluchi? Mrs. Badger thinks it's an Afghan.

You might consider publishing the spreadsheet here, and see if the experiences of afficionados of orientals confirm or deviate from your findings.

    What are You Reading Now?

Peter Davis lived and farmed 8 miles from where I live, in what was then a very different world. Edited by the diarist's great-great grandson. There's nothing like a primary source when you're reading History: the dead speak directly to you across an age. Where I've gotten to, he's just taken...

UFO's & UAP's: Is the Truth Out There?

The data includes deep bore tube samples through Greenland and Antarctic ice going back 120,000 years.
