Lane Era Charatan's Make 'Special" 4 Extra Large

That's probably a good and reasonable time period guess. Then there is my "Perfection" billard w/o the 'L' and all of the stamping consistent with Reuben era and no shape # or CP. Since it was never smoked I don't think the oval tapered bit is a replacement, but who knows; might have broken...

    Who Else Loves Old Gowrie?

One of my long-time favorites. I started smoking it in college when a prof shared some with me as I couldn't afford it myself. Smoked it with Black Mallory and Red Rapparire. I don't think I could handle the Latakia today on those two.

Lane Era Charatan's Make 'Special" 4 Extra Large

After reading the articles it appears your pipe is pre-Lane era. Probably post-War to 1960. Like mine pictured below, the missing CP may mean the pipe was re-stemed or they just they missed stamping it.

    Should say unsmoked

Lane Era Charatan's Make 'Special" 4 Extra Large

Here is a Charatan I know the age of since I purchased it new - 1974. It is unspoken. As I have said elsewhere, I have too many pipes as it is. This pipe demonstrates the loose standards in grading Charatans. This pipe is stamped "Distinction Delux" and "Extra Large". The straight grain on this...

Lane Era Charatan's Make 'Special" 4 Extra Large

I refer you to Pipedia.com Charatan. There are articles, especially in the footnotes with links to dating Charatans; a difficult task as you will read. Here is a Charatan I got in an Estate sale. Its a Perfection w/o the Lane 'L' stamp. It has never been smoked. It has a taper bit (pre-1955?)...

    First Attempt At Stem Replacement

You have persistence and patience. ? I have all the equipment and hand cut bits for the pipes I make, and its the most tedious and least likeable part (but critical) of the job for me. Congrats on a job well done.

And its a "Special " grade too. That's a higher grade! Great fine. Someone didn't know what they had.

    Maybe It Is Just Me...

Well I for one understand it. Often its the proportion or ratio of tobaccos in a mixture or blend. For example, I pulled out a tin of Stilman's I had in my humidor for 15 years. After a bowl I remembered why I put it away; It was a Latakia/Burley "bomb" with no complexity. It left my tongue and...

    Show and Tell

Here is another interesting pipe in my collection of antiques. The pipe has a meerschaum interior with a red glass exterior shell and gold filigree banding. It probably had an amber bit at one time. I fit it with a red lucien bit to match the glass. Victorian era I'm sure.

    Show and Tell

I have a very similar bulldog, only in gold filigree banding. At some point years ago after I acquired it (1975) I fit it with a Charatan DC bit. I don't smoke my antiques, as I have enough in my regular collection, more than a person should have. Nice set with fitted case and amber bits you...

    Drucquer's Inns of Court Review

Well, I pulled out my tin of Stilman's, an 8 oz. version they probably don't offer any longer - its been in my humidor for a long time. I smoked a bowl and have regretted it. My mouth and tongue have been sore for a day. Spilman's gave me powerful Latakia and earthy Burley flavors. It didn't...

    Royal Yacht, A Short-Short Review

W When I worked at Diebel's Pipe Shop, albeit a long time ago, I learned very quickly there are no two tasters alike. Like fingerprints, we are all different. Then there are all of the influences of type of pipe (meerschaum or briar, perhaps clay or calabash ). Basically, we can only paint...

1st Estate Pipe Purchase Has a Demon of a Lakeland Ghost!

Actually, if the oven is electric and run on 220V, it would cost you less then a 110V toaster oven. Also, those toaster ovens have notoriously bad thermostats. When the fire department comes and they ask you what the hell you were doing there's going to be some razed eyebrows! ??

1st Estate Pipe Purchase Has a Demon of a Lakeland Ghost!

I would recommend that you ream if to wood. Using Everclear (grain alcohol) and a small needle brush clean the shank and draw hole completely. If the draw hole is smaller then 4mm or 5/32"I drill mine out, but only if you are up for this. This will definitely remove old tars. Now plug the tenon...

    Drucquer's Inns of Court Review

I have an 8 0z tin of Stilman's that I bought a long time ago when it first came out. I haven't touched it in a long time; sitting in my humidor on the pipe tobacco shelf. I will have to revisit it. Some years ago I couldn't smoke anything with Latakia in it - made me cough which developed...

    Drucquer's Inns of Court Review

I was gone during that period, in graduate school and then the AF. I just know that Carl had a bad stroke, that tragically took his life, too young. However, Carl worked with and educated Mike at Diebels. BOTH, and Mary, made McC what it was.

    Drucquer's Inns of Court Review

Drucquer’s Inns of Court is an appropriate name for this blend. The Inns of Court in London are about as “old school” and conservative as it gets. Not only did many buildings survive the Great Fire of 1666, and the blitz of World War II, but it’s inhabitants are London’s lawyers, a very waist...
