Public Service Announcement Regarding Savinelli's Doblone d'Oro

I ended up mixing it with some Cunningham 1921, which was very good. My take on it is that it is a strong VaPer, a little too strong for me. Cutting it with the Cunningham made it more Virginia Forward, which is more my preference.

Humectants in Kohlhase & Kopp Blends?

My tongue is fairly sensitive to the humectant in different tobaccos. When K&K were making Peterson blends, I could not tolerate the humectant in the aromatics, but was fine with Marlin Flake, Peterson Irish Oak, and others that were more naturally oriented. The other day I opened a new tin of...

    Somewhat Gross Pipe Question

Have you ever clenched a pipe while loading it? Then fished round in your pocket for matches? That glob of moisture you suck back is not condensation.

    Pipe Smoking: Hobby? Life Style?

For me, pipes and tobacco is a hobby. I enjoy learning about the lore, as well as restoring estates and the methods behind the tobaccos and pipes I enjoy. Pipes and pipe tobacco are part of my lifestyle, but not the entirety of it. Used to be a time when I always had a pipe going, these days...

Barling -- my experience and yours

I have a Barling's Guinea Grain with a spectacular straight grain, a full bent that I am pretty sure was made during the transition period. It smokes well, and I can get an hour out of a smoke without a relight. The problem with any estate pipe is that you can never be sure what tobaccos were...

    Just A Pipe

I started with pipes, and it has been my mainstay for over 40 years. I have probably smoked about 20 cigars in all that time, and two cigarettes. Hated the cigarettes. I was lucky, and met a pipe guy early on and learned about good pipes and tobacco.

Do You Really Like to Smoke a Pipe With Filter

Yes, I use 9mm pipes. There have been some Virginia tobaccos that are vastly improved, for me, by the charcoal filters. The vast majority of my pipes, however, are unfiltered. So, any time I try something new, it will go through several different pipes and systems until I find the one that...

    Who's Taking Over?

I recently taught my daughter how to smoke a pipe, and two of my sons are Pipe Smokers as well. I plan on dividing my pipes and stash between the three, although I am working hard on not leaving too much tobacco behind.

Cornell and Diehl - Your Opinion

A lot of their blends made me nauseated, but after talking with them at The NOLA pipe show a few years back found that the blends I was having trouble with contained dark fired Kentucky, and they offered a few suggestions. My favorites now from C&D are Bijou, Yorktown, and the awesome Carolina...

When Was The Last Time You Bought A Blend That Was New To You?

Dobie’s Four Square Circles, just arrived. Not like Escudo, or PS LBS. Very different from Davidoff Flake Medallions, which is a favorite. This is smooth and deep, burns evenly, and has a richness I would associate with well aged tobacco. Nicotine is a bit high for me, but this is so good.

Who Made the Original London Dock?

What impresses me about this tobacco is that the cherry vanilla taste doesn’t burn off after the first few puffs, but lingers throughout the smoke. It’s good stuff.
