    Last of the Grabow Bulldogs?

Two or three years ago, I got a Dr. Grabow Excel straight textured pipe that was a squashed bulldog without a bead.

    Hello from Finland

Welcome from Maine, USA. One of the places where a great many Finnish immigrants to the USA (including my dad's folks) settled.

    Vultures Move To Town

The last time I visited my parents on the other coast, I remember watching out their back window a group of four turkey buzzards picking at a dead snake, perhaps 15 yards from the house.

    Midway Island Revisited

Had a shipmate who spent a year's duty on French Frigate Shoals LORAN station as an engineer. Once a year, the highest high tide would put the island (about the size of an aircraft carrier's flight deck) underwater by a foot or so.

    Duration of a Bowl

Have absolutely no idea. I've thought about watching the clock to find that out a few times, but never remember to when actually filling my pipes. I remember back after I bought my second or third pipe in 1974, how surprised I was that I got a smoke that lasted an hour and a quarter. Not sure...

    Anything Interesting On Your Workbench?

"Never put off 'till tomorrow what you can't put off to next week." I will become a founding member of the old American Procrastinator's Society if I ever get around to joining.

A great many of the books by E. E. "Doc" Smith, especially the Skylark of Space series, but not so much in the Lensman series.

    Smoking Coltsfoot?

Here's a bunch of things to try, with or without a tobacco base. I have tried mugwort mixed into tobacco, and don't find any problem with it. But I also didn't find anything fabulous either. I'm a guy whose sense of taste is very far from "World Class." It's probably not even "Town of Greene...

Smoking the Time Away in Maine

All I can see from my yard here in Greene ME, are trees, and the dead-end road we live on, or bits-and-pieces of two neighbors' homes through the leaves.

Hello from South Bend (Northern), Indiana

Welcome from Maine. I've been to Bend, and to North Bend (both in Oregon) and have often wondered if there was an East Bend, would it be somewhere out in the Pacific?

    Pipe Smoking for Compassion

Well, the Manga titled "Ningen Fushin no Boukenshatachi ga Sekai o Sukuu Youdesu" (in Romanji) a.k.a. "Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World" a.k.a. "It Seems Skeptical Adventurers Will Save the World" doesn't get a pipe showing up until the 27th chapter. The short Wizard...

How Many of Your Shirts Have Burned Cinder Holes in Them? ?

I've just been forcibly reminded that probably the majority of the holes in my shirts come from that first tamp after the false-light, which carries the hazard of dragging coals out (and thus sometimes spilling over the rim) with the first raising of it for the second light tamp around the...

    TAD: A Poll

Well, since neither P&C nor SP will ship tobacco to Maine, they're both falling by the wayside as far as I am concerned.

How Many of Your Shirts Have Burned Cinder Holes in Them? ?

Never try to clench when smoking a straight-stemmed clay pipe, because they always try to rotate upside down at your slightest inattention, thereby enabling the dumping of ash, coals and dottle into your lap.

    Robo Calls

A new one came this morning. Robo call claiming to be from the Federal Reserve. spoofed to be coming from area code 201.

How Long Have You Been Smoking a Pipe? And Who Cares?

Yeah, just watch out for the idiot out there driving around with your name on his or her bumper.

    The Art of Tamping

Well, newbies, you saw how the tobacco and ash "domed up" during the false light? That also occurs all the way down the bowl, and the occasional mid-bowl tamping keeps the hot coals in contact with the unburned tobacco just below it, enough to pass the fire downwards.

    MM Has Limited Crumble Kake.

I actually managed to get a tin of this on order before they were all gone! That, and one of the orange t-shirts.
