School me on Pipe Smoking Contests

They are just plain fun! No scientific or athletic skill required. Just sit down, visit with those around you and have a good time. The only time I am nervous or uncomfortable is until the first guy goes out - and it isn't me!

Long Term Cob Torture Test: 6 Months Under The Elements

Nothing wrong with smoking a good cob, but there is a downside. unless you are my age, you will outlive the cob.

2021 Texas Pipe Show - A Huge Success

It was a pleasant surprise to see you at the show, Dave! Hope you like that Johs and was thrilled when I saw that you were the one that won it. The only downside was that of the 37 contestants in the slow smoking contest, I found out that I was the oldest cowboy in the barn! Oh well....

    Outside of these Forums

I visited with McClelland's guru's Mike and Mary McNiel about this very subject a couple of years ago, and learned some things about Virginia tobacco - especially Red Virginia tobacco - that I never knew. I wrote a blog about my findings here: What is Red Virginia & Why is it So Special? -...

New Ashton Old Church vs New Castello Old Antiquari?

You will get all kinds of opinions on that one, even though you have selected two very well known and highly respected brands. Both are awesome brands and it would be impossible to say that one is better than the other. A shape preference - style of pipe - that suits you is really the only...

    Next Pipe Suggestions

I am among the group that says to save up for a quality hand made pipe and then pull the trigger. Because artisan pipe makers know that in order to make sales, they need a quality pipe, they seek out the best well cured wood, and learn how to make the engineering enhance the opportunity to get a...

    Amber or Amberoid?

Yes sir, it is easy and I learned this trick long ago from an old pipe smoker. Rub the stem like crazy and then put if up to the hair on your head. If the hair stands up and gravitates toward the stem, then it's amber. You can Google how to tell the difference and there are all kinds of other...

    Break-in Time?

Great answer by hoosierpipeguy. Some pipes are superior smokers right out of the gate and others need to get into the home stretch before crossing the finish line on top. It's kind of like breaking a horse to the saddle. Let it dictate the process. You'll know soon enough whether its a keeper or...

Are VaPers the Biggest Rabbit Hole in Pipe Tobacco or is it Straight Va?

You may try what a lot of pipe smokers do. Get yourself some blending Perique and add it to a Virginia that you like. Just add a little Perique at a time until you find just the right amount that makes the Virginias sing for you.

Losing a Pipe is like Losing a Friend

I didn't read through all the responses, but I am sure someone told you that broken shank is repairable, although the shank may be a bit shorter once done. If you love the pipe, then just contact one of the professional pipe repairmen our hobby is fortunate to have, and ask them to fix it for you.

What is Your most Ridiculous piece of Kit?

If it's useless I won't keep it, but for some reason I like to keep an old ten penny nail that I found back in high school and occasionally use it as a tamper/pick. Me and some buddies were sneaking some beer behind a construction site for apartments when I found it. I had just kept it in a...

    Pipe Just Won't Smoke?

8 times out of 10, when I have a pipe that smokes the way you describe, I remove the stem and drill it open from the shank into the bowl just a little more. By opening the draw, it often is like a totally different (and wonderful), smoking pipe.

What Pipe would You Like to have Back? Why?

I'm in the same camp as mortonbriar. The first pipe I ever bought was a Stanwell second called a Danish Sovereign. I bought it back in 1971 from a local tobacco shop. Exactly 20-years later in 1991 I accidentally left it on the table at a restaurant (back when you could still smoke a pipe after...

2021 Texas Pipe Show - A Huge Success

I think you hit the nail on the head, WVOldFart, most of the folks I visited with were absolutely giddy to be at a pipe show again. And I met several younger smokers who have advanced in the hobby over the last couple of years and were dying to go to their first pipe show and loved it!

    GH&Co. Dark Bird's Eye

I actually won a tin of that in the Texas Pipe Show raffle, Chasing. But if you'd like to see your prediction come true, I'll sure try to accommodate you. (-; Steve

2021 Texas Pipe Show - A Huge Success

I had a great time at the Texas Pipe Show on Saturday, and was shocked at the amount of people who attended. The venue was packed to the rafters and a huge thanks to the show organizers! I finished 4th out of 37 contestants at the Slow Smoke Contest, but in an official competition I would have...
