Hammer = pipe? Not for most of us. Yes, at a minimum a pipe is a tool. But as BK above posits, none of us are cleaning our hammers, polishing the handle, coating the head with expensive oils or ointments after each use, nor placing 12-50 of them in a rack to display or store.

A bud of mine was involved in a car accident, When he got out of the hospital he went to the junk yard in the hope of finding one of his favorite pipes. The car had been crushed.

I didn't read through all the responses, but I am sure someone told you that broken shank is repairable, although the shank may be a bit shorter once done. If you love the pipe, then just contact one of the professional pipe repairmen our hobby is fortunate to have, and ask them to fix it for you.
