I had two pipes with ghosts that did not respond to salt and alcohol, wet coffee grounds, white vinegar, cleaning the mortise with brush and alcohol etc. I had almost given up. Cellaring question
If you jarred them fairly soon after opening the tins you should be fine. Did the jars have a lot of air space left over? Many prefer their tobacco to be somewhat dry as I do. You can rehydrate if you prefer it with more moisture. There are many posts here about that.- RonB

I thought I did. Quite a lot of time with the little brush and alcohol and then pipe cleaners and alcohol after a long soak with coffee grounds and alcohol. May I didn’t get the coffee grounds down in there sufficiently.- RonB

I was not having success with just the coffee grounds and alcohol treatment which is why I will try the charcoal next. I also did a little sanding but probably not enough to make a difference.- RonB

I had some follow-up questions on getting rid of ghosting: Are the activated charcoal pellets the same as those sold for use in an aquarium? Or maybe it should be ground powder? Any opinions on whether charcoal is better than coffee grounds? Is unused ground coffee superior to used coffee...- RonB

Buchan's espionage novels were very good. Geoffrey Household wrote a little later in a similiar vein. Household's Rogue Male is a masterpiece. I re-read it every few years.- RonB

Here are my three current reads: Anthony Trollope's Victorian novel The Way We Live Now. It's about the decline in Victorian society with its obsession with money and unscrupulous speculators. Sounds kinda current, huh? Some consider this Trollope's best novel but I can't say that I agree...- RonB
