***What Are You Smoking, March 2023?***

Yes, Wessex pipes came in different finishes and stems. The pipes I referred to earlier was to really to make the point that "Made in France" would likely appear on French made Wessex pipes. I imagine "Made in Italy" would be stamped on those Wessex pipes of Italian production. Do yours have...

***What Are You Smoking, March 2023?***

Wessex pipes have been made by more than one factory. Around 2005 we started to see Wessex blasts in about 5 or 6 shapes with 3 digits which were made by Chacom. Old bowls allegedly, with handcut rubber cumberland. They will be marked "Made in France". More recently these pipes in a similar...

    Ken Byron Ventures Tobaccos

You may find a KBV blend that you absolutely love and then learn that it can't be reproduced due to non-availability of certain tobaccos. If that happens you might find something new that will work for you in the same style. KBV blends are very well made, in my opinion, so even if a blend you...

What Cigar are You Smoking? - 2022

Last night it was a La Flor Dominicana double ligero natural lancero. Beautifully made cigar. I think the LFD double ligeros are the closest in style to Cubans-very much like Cuban Partagas cigars. Smoked it with my favorite Cognac made by Paul Giraud.

What Cigar are You Smoking? - 2022

La Flor Dominicana double ligero 600 natural. In my view, LFD double ligero naturals are the closest in taste to Cubans. They remind me of Cuban Partagas cigars which I love but alas can no longer find or afford.

What Cigar are You Smoking? - 2022

Well, if they have been in a propely humidified environment, you're in for a real treat. Put them in a good quality tupperware-like contaIner or humidor if have one. Add a 69% relative humidity Boveda pack. You should be good to go.

    Cohibas

For a number of years I had the opportunity of smoking many Cohiba Robustos and Siglo VIs which were purchased from Sautter's in London. They were beyond excellent in my opinion. When, for a number of reasons, my connection for Cohibas ended I needed to find a less expensive alternative. I...

Pipes Never Smoked Down to the Bottom

Many pipe smokers believe that repeated smoking to the bottom will improve the overall enjoyment of the tobacco, especially as one gets toward the bottom because the bottom has been well broken in. There is no science here, it's just opinion. I happen to share that view. I don't know of any pipe...

    Finding Conic Bowled Pipes

In my view parablic chamber bits are best, because they gently taper toward the bottom. If you like to smoke to the bottom, I think your chances of doing so are greatly enhanced with a parablic bit. The only way to know for sure that you're getting a pipe made with a parabolic chamber bit is to...

How Far down the Bowl do You Go?

Every pipe maker, regardless of whether it's a factory pipe maker using fraized bowls or an artisan woud like to see the draft hole driled on center and flush with the bottom of the bowl, i.e., neither high or low. That doesn't always happen, even with expensive artisan pipes. High draft holes...

    Do Enjoy Your Mastercraft Pipes?

Mastercraft pipes were largely made in French factories. The company imported huge quantities of these pipes and were targeted to appeal to the aveage pipe smoker. As with many French made factory pipes, some were made better than others and smoked well. I've had some MC or MC products, e.g...

What are You Watching? Year 2022

Just finished 5th season of Better Call Saul on Netflix. Enjoyed it more than Breaking Bad, although the two series taken together comprise the best TV I've ever seen, Nudges the Sopranos out of the top box. 5/5.

    Extreme Bend Pipes?????

The "percage circulaire" or "percage courbe" is likely the technique that was used to produce the great LCs of the past, although some LCs were made with a straight drill. Those LCs do not have the same elegant curved shank, in my opinion. Mr. Telfer of Sutherland pipes should be praised for his...

***What Are You Smoking, April 2021?***

Hey that's a great looking pipe. I remember it from Dave's web site. Does it smoke as great as it looks?

The Difference in Colour of Aged Briar

An interesting discussion. The question for me is which pipe will smoke better- the briar aged two years "on the shelf" or one with many more years of "shelf age"? Of course there are several other factors to consider which will affect the quality of the smoke. Some we all know are ...
