    I believe the cake toward the top is thin so the briar is less protected there and at the rim from lighting and from the cherry. There is also the possibility that the cake toward the bottom had a hole in it allowing heat through to cause a burnout.

    I store 1 2/3 to 2 lbs of tobacco flakes and ribbons in half gal masons with a moisture level of about 20 percent with no mold for years. I vacuum seal them using a small device that sucks out the air I got on Amazon. Works well for me.
