Canadian Import Advice Help - Tax was 200%!
Doesn't sound like an error was made. There's about a million taxes on both tobacco and alcohol. You have Federal Tobacco Tax, Provincial Tobacco Tax, GST, and on a large enough order, Duty. So don't import 3 pounds at a time...- sasquatch

I think the construction is a bigger factor. You could give me the best briar on earth and I could make a pipe that's a crappy smoker by misaligning certain things, leaving other things rough, whatever. Ser Jacopos are worth looking at, but in truth, if you buy Castellos straight out of Italy, they are about 20% cheaper than the American pricing, you can get them for 2 or 300 bucks. -

Getting sent to collections can be serious, it can screw you up at the airport, all kinds of things, so my letter would have been a lot nastier than yours. What a bizarre way to do business. As this leaks out, lots of customers will drop.- sasquatch

Pipes are usually dyed with alcohol-based pigments. Maple might take regular wood stain but it's not known for it, really, it's pretty light colored and pretty densely grained. For real, look at pipemakersforum, there is an answer for everything there.- sasquatch

There's a spin-off group called "Pipe Makers" on Facebook, you'll get the same people and same advice there. Oak isn't super toxic (stay away from African hardwoods), things like walnut are worse on most of the indexes. But "getting cancer" really can't be your main fear if you are...- sasquatch

Sodium Silicate And Mortises
The mortise? I've seen guys treat a mortise with cyanoacrylate, but sodium silicate/waterglass I've never heard of. It's used as a chamber-coating ingredient pretty frequently, so maybe someone has carried it further....- sasquatch

Yeah, my horror stories include 77 dollars in tax on 2 tins (50g each) of Sir John's, and that time I traded a guy a pipe for a pound of tobacco, and got taxed on the tobacco for a huge loss on the trade. Couple hundred bucks and that's like 15 years ago. So the short answer is, don't...- sasquatch

It'll be a lot more than that. Duty is part of it, but provincial and federal excise taxes both apply too. 100 tins of tobacco is going to cost you about 3 grand, but I doubt they'd even let you bring in that much.- sasquatch

Sickness messed up my taster - will it ever come back?
Lots of times a sinus infection will make pipe smoking just seem totally alien and foul, so watch for that, but yeah... covid ... it screws a guy up. Took me 2 months to get tasting/smelling at all properly last year, and more like 6 months to get fully working. And then I got it again in...- sasquatch
