    Pipe Bend Preference Poll

    I voted straight because I couldn't vote 1/16th to 1/8th bent.

    Methods for Baking Bulk Tobacco?

I prefer Dr. Fred Hanna's method of baking at 175-180 degrees for around 5 hours. I just use a stainless pot, spread the tobacco evenly inside, and replace the cover until the process is finished.

Perique Farmer Brandon Gravois on Radio Show of Sept. 1, 2015

Fantastic interview with Brandon Gravois! It never ceases to amaze me, how you continually find unique topics to explore, and at the same time promote the hobby of pipe/tobacco smoking and collecting. Too bad you didn't get to actually go to Louisiana to do the interview. Those folks really know...

Do you Cellar or just Smoke?

I cellar more than I smoke. I probably only average 1 bowl per day, sometimes 2. I figure if for some reason I ever need to quit smoking, I will be able to turn a small profit if I decide to liquidate my cellar. http://tobaccocellar.com/Dutch

Organize By Blend Or By Pipe?

My method has always been to purchase pipes that call to me. If it is a pipe with quite a bit if age, is unique and unsmoked, then I will usually never smoke it. Then there are the pipes I purchase with the intent of smoking. I never buy a pipe, then pressure myself to smoke it immediately. I...

Methods for Storing pipe tobacco short term

Like Harris, I use the plastic jars and Tupperware style containers, which work great for short term storage. They also make it easy to rehydrate tobacco, by misting the inside of the lid when needed. The only problem with these containers, is that they can pick up a ghost. The simple solution...

Things I wish I knew when I started

I wish someone had explained to me why quality stem work can make some pipes cost 3 to 5 times as much as production pipes. Also, why I should just invest in 5 to 10 cobs, and in the long run, add 1 quality briar at a time to my collection, as I could afford them. IMO, it's much better to...

Why are there so few pipe repairmen?

George, I made a similar observation in another thread, in response to your interview I listened to this morning. I remember when I first started tig welding, it was very hard to get my foot in the door with a prospective employer, because they were so cautious in hiring a welder with minimal...

George Dibos on Radio Show of August 25, 2015

Brian, another fantastic interview I enjoyed immensely. Mr. Dibos reputation in the pipe community precedes him. As a Tig Welder with over 20 years experience, I can tell you that it takes special skills and patience, to repair material that has been damaged, and bring it back to spec. In most...

Light to heavy - or other way around?

I agree with those who have stated light to heavy. Also, if you are new to pipe and cigar smoking, your palate will be developing over the next couple years, so expect some changes to occur in how you perceive flavor notes. You may at some point want to go back and revisit a particular blend...

    Pipes Magazine Radio Show Problems

Al, I was downloading the episodes, and that is one reason I enjoyed using the internet explorer version. Good to know there is more than one way to skin a cat!

    Smoking to the bottom...

stflorian, one trick you can try to offset the problem, is to dry your tobacco longer. Then, once you have your pipe loaded, using your thumb and forefinger, make a ring around the rim of your pipe, and exhale into the bowl. This will add some moisture to the tobacco in the top of the bowl. The...

    Smoking Bent Pipes?

A greater chance of turbulence with bent pipes, can create more buildup over time. I have always preferred straight pipes, because there is less chance of turbulence, which creates condensation and residue buildup. Then again, I am not a constant clencher, as I need to touch my tongue to my...

    Pipes Magazine Radio Show Problems

I am having a serious crisis, and need some advice. Recently when attempting to access the radio show episodes, I get a message that says "Proxy server not allowed." I have gone into my settings, and made sure that the LAN proxy server setting box is unchecked, but I still have the problem even...

Premal Chheda on Radio Show of August 18, 2015

Fantastic interview with the owner of one of the oldest pipe shops in the country. I especially enjoy hearing the details of the hobby from years past. Would especially enjoy an interview with Jesse Jones, when you guys can make that interview happen!

What is your single most favorite pipe?

jpmcwjr, consider this. Jesse took several pics of the pipe for me when he finished it, and the pic I posted os one of those original pics. Since then, I have smoked 17 tins of McCranie's Red Flake out of that little brandy, and I'm currently smoking the 18th tin. At this point, I am fairly...

    Pipe Whacking

I remember a couple years ago, while sitting in a parking lot smoking my pipe, I noticed another pipe smoker standing across the parking lot enjoying his own. I was considering getting out and going over and talking with him, but the summer heat was discouraging. While I sat there, trying to...
