James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

What a lovely Charatan Executive Fabioptrn. This is the first Charatan that I have seen fitted with a Cumberland mouthpiece!!! The James Upshall P grade looks like a very early one - nice shape & nice grain.

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Hi Ted, thank you for your kind words. What a lovely canted Billiard! - I really like this shape and with some really fine grain too. This pipe was definitely made by Barry Jones and it looks like he personally took this pipe through each stage. It has some really great lines. I am not...

There Must Be Charatan DNA in This Pipe?

If the 'Old Course...' is engraved, it could well be made by Upshall. I will ask Barry about this one when I next speak with him on the 'phone. Lovely shape and lovely grain!

There Must Be Charatan DNA in This Pipe?

This is a photo of the 'MADE BY HAND' used at James Upshall. I think it does look quite similar although I am no stamp specialist.

There Must Be Charatan DNA in This Pipe?

I think that the mouthpiece here is originally from another pipe as the curve would be a little more pronounced for this shape.

There Must Be Charatan DNA in This Pipe?

This one confused me too when I saw it on ebay. It does look like a Barry Jones one whether from Charatan or Upshall. I did notice the 'Made by Hand' stamp on the reverse of the shank looks very similar if not identical to the Upshall one. Is the front part ....St Andrews stamped or engraved...

    Larrysson Straight Grain

Yes Jesse I agree. Paul is a self-taught genius with exceptional attention to detail. His hand-cut vulcanite mouthpieces are the finest I have ever seen...way up there... and, when working in pipe stores in Germany in 1975-1977, and in the Frankfurt trade fairs from 1975-1989 I have seen many...

    Larrysson Straight Grain

No, not at all. I saw it and thought how fine this piece is.. and coming from England.

    Larrysson Straight Grain

I am so pleased to see one of very few 'pure' naturally finished clean straight grains (with a hand-cut vulcanite Cumberland mouthpiece) being made in England. The English tradition of handmade straight grains seems to be a thing of the past. Hopefully 'The Tradition Continues'! :

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

I am going to the workshop on Monday and spending a couple of days there. Pictures will be possibly Wednesday, though not finished pipes, 'merely' turned and fitted with rod vulcanite-roughly shaped and filed.

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Thank you for your kind words Fabio. I am writing a 'Pipe-makers Log' which is more of a diary, as and when I recall things that I have experienced along the way. I have also started to make a few pipes again, not many just a few pieces for fun and I am enjoying the challenge and believe me it...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Yes Fabio, a really nice P grade from pre 1983 era. The slight imprecision is one of the indicators that it was hand pressed-stamped in the original way. There is such an art to hand stamping. This one was done by hand rather than stamped on a machine (still not engraved). I think we got the...

    Charatan Bulldog Restoration

Al, this is a lovely pipe. The Special quality was around in 1951 as shown, and this was the largest size of the Bulldog shape no. 8 I think that the mouthpiece is hand-cut. I have learnt that the clue is that the saddle 'step' is sharp and 90 degrees rather than curved (a photo of the bite...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

. That is a lovely early one and with nice grain. Were you able to find out where these ungraded Upshalls came from?

These are all stamped, not engraved which does date them before 1984.

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Yes sablebrush, this is such an unusual Charatan and I like it very much - so much so that I am going to draw a template of this one and try to create one.

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

In 1983/84 we bought an engraving machine that 'cut' the name into the shank and likewise the JU into the mouthpiece, so this is one way of dating the pipes. All the pipes that we made were stamped (or engraved) with a quality stamp-for the least expensive Upshall it was S, then P, B, G, E, X...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Hello Fabio and welcome to the forum. This Upshall reminds me of the styles we were making in 1980-81. I think the James Upshall is stamped on this one rather than engraved and the same for the JU on the mouthpiece. I do not know why it has no quality stamp/grade. This may have been one of...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

The DC mouthpiece was designed by William Williamson-Barling and first patented in England in 1965 with the US patent application in January 1966

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

Hi fishingandpipes. What a lovely piece. I have never seen a shape like this with a spur. This Selected, in my opinion, was made in the early 1960s (1960-62). I think that from the late 1950s (1959 onwards) was when the first Charatan 'Freehands' were produced and stamped FH. Barry Jones who...
