The Bottom of the Bowl
I normally dump the ash around the midpoint of the bowl to help with lighting the tobacco. As most have said, proper tamping technique and gentle puffing should usually do the trick. How Long Does Your Average Bowl Take to Smoke?

I have tried quite a few of the non-aro's they produce and they are all excellent! The only Aromatic I have tried is Classic Burley Kake and it is a good, straightforward aromatic. I imagine the blends you purchased will be excellent aro's considering the other wonderful blends they produce.- mrhooker93

Building a cake...
As many have stated, I would just pack the pipe with a good blend like SWR or Carter Hall and puff away. They will ensure a good cake is formed in the bowl of your pipe, but of course, each smoker has his own preferences......- mrhooker93
