The New York Times. The unequivocal source of information. Take it to the bank.

Then load up on pipes and tobacco prepping for the tobaccopalypse.

Although the thread is more of a joke, I see that a few of you were tickled by the NYT.
Since I live in Croatia, feel free to recommend some more relevant US news portals. 🤷‍♂️
Eh, everyone has their skew, so as long as you understand the skew of any establishment, no one is really better than the other.

Unfortunately, I can't read the article since it's behind a login. That being said regarding the headline, the couple of statements I can see make it seem like niche predictions (maybe this is expressed in the article, again, I can't actually read it).

Tobacco is still, generally, the devil and it's hard to imagine legislation that's already been put in place by various states/cities/towns roll that back. If all of the sudden Massachusetts, for example, rolled back their flavor ban law, I'd likely start to wonder if the end times were near. Things like that will throttle any type of explosion of tobacco uptick as access remains restricted to a number of geographic locations.

Article is a hodgepodge of “what to expect” type clickbait with various naive contributors chiming in from their various areas of “expertise”.

The particular section about pipes was written by one Dani Blum, who is supposedly a health and wellness reporter in her late 20’s or early 30’s. Likely due to her age, she doesn’t have very large corpus of work, but two nicotine related topics she has covered in the past are the dangers of nicotine pouches and pretty aggressive attacks on vaping.

I don’t see much more about her except I found she seems to have written or spoke on behalf of the American Lung Association in support of state legislation in Maine (which passed) LD 1028

“An Act to Prevent and Reduce Tobacco Use with Adequate Funding and by Equalizing the Taxes on Tobacco Products and To Improve Public Health”

Although she has also written about studies that show smoking weed leads to less alcohol consumption, seemingly much friendlier to weed than tobacco. She has some well publicized political ties but I’ll stop there and keep things apolitical.

Lovely picture of the crack reporter from the Gray Lady.

This happens to be adjacent to work that I do professionally (in two different ways, believe it or not) and if you guys will humor me, forgive me some snark, and allow me to theorize a possible way this type of thing happens:

---

Young Dani goes out drinking at some bar or pub. After a dozen cosmopolitans she glances over and sees a dude smoking a pipe. She says “That’s weird!” and giggles along with her friends. But maybe he's cute, so you know, whatever. The next morning her editors calls her, asking for a paragraph about what to expect in 2026! How exciting! She wakes up, takes some Advil and quickly pens up a paragraph for her editor.

Did she cite a study? No. Did she do an interview? No. Did she talk to industry insiders? No. Did she conduct any kind of investigation whatsoever? Nope. She just made it up.

The next thing you know, millions of people are reading her imagination in the New York Times about how Pipes will have their moment.

---

But TimeKiller!” I hear you say. “You just made up a completely hypothetical, completely fictional scenario in your own head and wrote it up and then published for everyone to read as if it was real!

Yes I did. Exactly like our lovely Dani did. ;)
