So I ordered some Decatur pipe wax and I get a response email today that I need to answer some questions and submit my ID to them.

I'm thinking I should just not respond and wait until I deal with another vendor to buy some pipe wax.

I'm starting to wish I had lived in the 1950's.
I'm guessing that it relates to the FDA ruling years ago that tobacconists were required to get info from their clients to to avoid selling our glorious nasty weed to minors. But, I don't see how that applies to pipe wax, unless it's just a blanket decision to follow that directive.

It's because tobacco is unarguably and absolutely the worst thing in the history of Planet Earth---many times worse than bubonic plague, nerve gas, radioactive contamination, and War of the Worlds squid-alien destructo tripods combined---and our faithful protectors, a.k.a. politicians, are trying their best to save us from it.

And the first step in such protection is to frustrate the shit out people when dealing with tobacco in any way, shape, or form at every opportunity.

Yet kids can download free porn all day, and buy weed online with their parents Google Pay app.

It will take less time to provide an image of your ID than it will to argue or complain about it. Irritating perhaps but pragmatically, why bother? I'd prefer to spend my time doing something I enjoy than arguing over some mundane bullshit.

I understand that vendors aren’t doing this because they want to. It’s probably far easier to require ID for all transactions than to hope they don’t accidentally miss one and have the overlords make their lives miserable.

Who thinks that this regulation is actually keeping minors from getting tobacco products? Nobody.

I keep forgetting that the government overlords just have our best interest at heart...

I think its just the redundancy of laws constantly passed that bug people.
Its the slippery slope that will eventually make it ILLEGAL to buy any age restricted item online.
Its already the law that you must be 18 to get a credit/debit card. A guardian can add a minor as an authorized user, but that's not the responsibility of the vendor to prove. So far, its assumed that the user is the owner of the card, and therefore able to purchase restricted items.
And stacking laws rarely works.
For instance, there are over 20,000 laws on the books nationwide to keep people from being injured/killed by firearms. But, every day there are firearm injuries and deaths. Will the 20,001st law stop the injuries?
Im pretty sure the number of 12 year olds buying a tin of Gordon Pym online is pretty low.
And the "just incase" thing is also annoying. The OP is trying to buy WAX, not an age restricted item.
I cannot buy knives on Amazon from most vendors. Because NYC has silly knife laws, the rest of the state cannot buy a Case slip joint knife. Amazon just errors on the side of caution, and refuses knife sales to all of NYS.
