Just crack it a little.

I’d imagine you could spread the contents out on a baking pan and actually toast it or nuke it in a microwave or leave it in the sun, too.

The Danes might think we like vinegar kind of like some folks like Latakia

It’s intentional, whatever causes it.
Just so weird their other blends don't have it. Also the cut is different than it was some years back. Used to be more granola like and now is a slightly longer more inconsistent cut.

I got a pouch of the new stuff, when I opened it up I was like "I know that smell..." Smelled like the chemicals in the darkroom in my high school photography class. I emailed SP to give them a heads up about a potentially bad batch and they gave me a refund. I kept it in a jar and it never seemed to dissipate so I tossed it. Too bad I never got to experience what it used to be like.

If Scandinavian isn’t the largest manufacturer of premium (non Buoy Gold type) pipe tobaccos on earth it’s close and it’s trying to be.

SWR is about a 90 year old blend. It’s valuable. Their customers really are smoke shops and if they don’t sell it, it dies.

Granger, Velvet and Half and Half smell same as ever, maybe better.

Maybe the European do gooders have outlawed some sweet smelling topping or casing that is substituted with a vinegary replacement?

As far as I know, vinegar is used as a preservative in the tobacco industry. In the well known, discontinued brand that "ketchup" aroma. It's not added as a flavoring. They can do better. It has just happened since their move over seas. I could be wrong on this but from what I hear that's the reason for the vinegar. What is odd to me is it only seems SWR regular has this issue. Maybe our only option is respectfully complaining to our tobacco shops and asking if they would pass on our complaints to the manufacturer. It's not the tobacco shops fault. I wonder how much revenue SWR draws for the company🤔

I too have experienced the pickling of SWR in new pouches and 7oz tins. So....I ventured back to the aromatic. Used to smoke it when stores were sold out of regular SWR. Its really quite nice...not like the original SWR but the aromantic proponent is not overwhelming or perfume. The burley is there and its mild and has received a number of compliments. That all being said...if anyone ventures into the new Danish version of SWR regular and doesn't taste vinegar.... Please Post!
I tried a 2021 Batch of SWR and it had a little vinegar taste at the start of the bowl for about 4 puffs. The vinegar taste was sub par, but not awful.

I've had the lid completely off the mason jar of the Danish SWR for a few weeks now. The good news is the vinegar is going away....smoking a tiny bowl in my old Linkmans Filt-O-Cork. The vinegar burn is gone now, but I still catch a little bit in the taste, every few days I'll put the lid on and shake it a bunch. I still like Granger way better though.20250820_170357.jpg

Thanks. I’m going to see if smokingpipes will give me a credit for the salt n’ vinegar SWR.
Good luck. I still think stg needs to do something about this and iron out production issues. It's clearly a defective product. I've had mine jarred and aired out and it's still awful.

I’ve been a cigar smoker off and on for 40 years, recently took up the pipe and after shredding my tounge and slowly figuring things out, now throughly loving it!

Decided to venture into the codger blends. Wish I’d seen this thread before this SWR disappointment.

Enjoying my Borkum and captain black so far. Still have Half & Half to open and the SWR aromatic.

I grabbed a pouch from a local tobacco store on a whim along with my first pouch of Paladin.

The SWR wasn't terrible. I got a bit of vinegar, but it wasn't off putting. And it smokes really well out the pouch. Minimal relights, burns down nice and even.

I won't chase it, but I dont regret the pouch.

The aromatic IS far superior, though.

You may want to try Carter Hall and Prince Albert. No vinegar.

I bought a pouch of SWR Original the other day to see if the vinegar smell has lessened. It had a slight vinegar smell when I opened it. I like my tobacco dry, so I spread it out for a few days and most of the vinegar taste had dissipated. I always thought the old time original had a slight vinegar taste anyway. I believe the biggest gripe I have with STG tobacco is that the quality of the tobacco isn't as good as the U.S. made. Lately I have gotten used to the quality of the tobacco I buy not being as good as it used to be. It might be my taste buds. It is what it is. I enjoy what I can get. I will continue to get SWR Original because it is still worth smoking if you dry it out properly.

SmokingPipes asked me to air it out for a while and then try it.
Unfortunately that doesn't help for me but some say it does. I wish it did though but I remember what swr should be like and even if you air out the vinegar, it isn't right. That flavoring they use is nonexistent and it still smells like vinegar and I let it air off for more than a month. I gave up and put the lid back on the jar. Did you get a pouch or a tub? I was lucky I was gifted 2 pouches of it and didn't have to buy any.

A pouch. They said they'd escalate if I'm not happy with the results.
