FYI I should restate that I'm intending this as a PSA thread rather than a show-off thread. But as the old saying goes, the road to dick-measuring contests is paved with good intentions. I forget who said that, but he was probably pretty important. Maybe it was Virgil. Or perhaps W.C Fields.

Anyway, I've been smoking a pipe for just shy of seven years now, and in that time, I've gone from having one 16 oz. jar of [insert Mac Baren aromatic here] and one basket pipe to about a dozen pipes and what my latest cellar inventory job has revealed to be a good two dozen pounds or so of tobacco. At the tortoise-esque rate I smoke, this will easily last me the rest of my life and, having no children, will surely leave some poor schmuck with the annoying task of selling or disposing of the stuff upon my departure from this mortal coil.

All that said, regarding the aforementioned cellar inspection, I feel mostly pretty good about what I've going on here. Looks like I've got about a 60-25-15 ratio of bulk to tins to jars. While I expect to have a lot of active jars to satiate my appetite for variety, at this stage of things, I'm feeling a slight regret that I didn't discover bulk earlier than I did, and the (to me) somewhat ridiculous menagerie of single tins I've got is (and always has) put something of a strain on the small amount of room I actually have to build and retain a cellar. The following photo should illustrate this conundrum amply:

So my advice to anyone new at cellaring (especially if you've got a limited amount of storage space to work with like I do)...do your beefing up on bulk, not tins! You'll thank yourself later.

And yes...the rug really ties the room together. 🎳

I have no idea about ratios, but I have a LOT more jarred bulk tobacco than anything else. That being said, if you are ever in the position where you want to sell off any of your cellar, tins move most quickly. if you have sealed bulk, then those move too. Jarred tobacco is generally slower moving and unless the buyer knows you, they won't pay what tins would bring for the same weight.

I spent many years thinking I would never sell any tobacco. I am now considering a mild to moderate downsize and so I am feeling the fact that so much of my cellar is jarred.

Ive got the room, but ive been concentrating on tins as of late.
I have many, many pounds of bulk jarred up from the last 25+ years. But my tin purchases were usually just to buy one or two tins of a blend, smoke them, and move on.
The last year ive concentrated heavily on tin acquisition. Blends that only come in tins, I'll buy one or two. If I like them enough, I'll buy more. For new to me blends which DO come in bulk also, I'll usually buy two tins. One to smoke, and one to cellar. Then I may buy some bulk of that blend to cellar.
Yes, I make everything more complicated than it needs to be. :)

Amen to that! Most of my cellar is bulk blends... I feel like I specifically avoided exploring a lot of tin-only blends for the sole purpose of saving money in this hobby. Haha. Once I get my cellar to the stockpile I want, I'll branch out a little and try some tin blends more often.

Now, let's see a photo or two of that there vinyl collection!

I like it! What's your setup like? I just got back into record collecting and bought a Fluance RT85. I'm really liking it so far.
Kenwood KD-55F, from at least the late 70s, through an Onkyo receiver and Tannoy speakers. Nothing glamorous, but it gets the job done.

Any Elvis?
Edith Piaf?
No and no. Closest I get is Eddie Cochran and Bea Wain respectively.

Bulk is definitely better for storage, and I trust properly sealed mylar more than I do tins. Compacted formats like flakes, cakes, and plugs are especially space efficient. Unfortunately, a lot of blends just aren't available in bulk, so I have a big tub of tins sitting in my closet taking up space. I also smoke a very low volume and have enough tobacco to last me the rest of my days, assuming it remains smokable.

I love looking at stacks of tins, it’s so satisfying! However, you’re quite right that bulk is a great way to cellar. I panic bought like 20 lbs of bulk when Mac Baren and Sufliff were going bye bye.

I took each 1 lb and divided 2 oz. portions into small 7 mil mylar bags and heat sealed them. Then put all 8 small bags in a big 7 mil mylar bag that’s not heat sealed, so I can easily pull a pouch out. That shit will last forever and takes up way less space and weight than tins. I just buried them in the closet 🤷‍♂️
