I was surprised that this Sasieni Patent Era pipe did so well. The stem looks like a replacement to me. The dots and pattern look too large to be factory. The seller said it didn't have a stinger, but he didn't answer if the tenon was threaded to accept one.

We don't have a definitive answer to your question, but the current thought is that 'special' indicates a 'special' run. This pipe fits the bill, as it's not a normal Peterson. I have two with the 'special' stamp - each has something unusual about it. So does 'special' mean ONE special pipe for one customer? Or a special run of a group of pipes? I don't think anyone knows for sure.

I seem to vaguely recall a reference to specials being handmade pipes given by certain of Peterson’s master pipemakers to guests during tours?
