Back in June I had oral surgery to start the process of getting two implants. I stopped smoking, entirely.

Tonight, thee months on, is such a fantastic evening! Low humidity, cool and quiet. A Piliated woodpecker is overhead, working on the bugs in the old walnut tree. Crickets chirp in the meadow and the smell of late summer is in the air. Reasonably sure that everything has healed in my mouth, I chose this beauty (thank you, Dan Chlebove) to break fast. Well, there’s a world of flavor and aroma here that I never fully appreciated in these until I took an extended smoking pause. While I don’t recommend unnecessary oral surgery, I do highly recommend the occasional extended vacation from smoking to reset and reinvigorate the senses. It’s wonderful! Next stop: Balkan Supreme from 2012!

Not to mention a great way to cap off a week. Enjoy!

What's in the glass? Inquiring livers minds want to know.
It’s a rich Australian Chardonay. A budget bottle, but very enjoyable with the grilled salmon, fresh garden salad and bread baked on the grill!

The bugs are now into the second movement of their late summer symphony. Mesmerizing.

Great cigar to break your fast!
I do not smoke pipes or cigars from November-March....because its too cold.
I spend hours a day outside in the winter. The LAST thing I want to do is spend more time RELAXING outside! :)
The first week back in the Spring is always great. Everything tastes fantastic.

Me too, I have plenty of snuff and snus, but honestly I have no addiction anymore to nicotine. Like my snuff use is usually a mentholated morning wake up blast, then maybe something mid morning or after lunch. My snus use is usually a pouch a day. I just don't see any appeal in smoking in the winter, as it gets very cold where I am. And if you aren't enjoying it what's the point? I also find I can't really taste anything with extremely cold air. Good to see another person who can take it or leave it.
Welcome back @woodsroad

Yup. I spent two weeks in a hospital fifteen years ago (no prep for it, mentally or otherwise), and vividly remember my first bowl after returning home.

The clarity and intensity of flavor was amazing. Like layers of sensory filters I never knew were there had been peeled away or shut off while I was gone.

I’ve taken breaks before, usually for sinusitus, or while on vacation, but this was the longest pause at 3 months. It wasn’t at all difficult, but I’m really accustomed to smoking a pipe in the car and in the evening, weather permitting. Long car trips for work were the most noticeable, especially when facing a lot of traffic headed home, as I often do returning from Philadelphia at rush hour. It’s just nice to have something rewarding to do when faced with slow traffic and potential carjacking. I like to think that nobody wants to carjack a vehicle filled with Latakia smoke, but I think it’s the fact I drive an 8 year old VW wagon that keeps me safe.

I’ll spark up my first pipe tonight.
Film at 11!

What if the passenger on a two-up motorbike hops off at your door, sticks a Glock in your face, and demands you get out and hand him your keys or he'll kill you... only wants to visit his mother in the hospital or something like that?

Something so urgent that an explanation can't be given because it would waste precious seconds?

Isn't the chance of that being the case enough for you to let such guys have your car without argument every time?

Are you really that devoid of empathy and compassion?

Or maybe he just wants it to impress the girl he's got a date with that night... don't you believe in True Love?

Your presumptive negativity, pessimism, and lack of generosity is on the verge of needing therapy, Mr. Woodsroad.

Clearly, you’ve never driven in North Philadelphia in rush hour. The only way he’s getting to the hospital in a reasonable amount of time is in an ambulance. So, yeah. I’d help him with that.
