I played a Bach Prelude. Everything worked! I made a couple more minor adjustments and played some Chopin.

Had I ever fixed a piano action before? No.

Now, had you said you never played piano before, THAT would have been impressive!

I read about someone on here suggesting wooden popsicle sticks to ream, after reading about all the dangers of going overboard. Tried it and works like a charm with no danger of damaging the bowl.

I've restored more estates with over-reamed bowls than I have with gouges from a knife. I always prefer a knife when removing cake and only pull out the reamer as a last resort for the super stubborn cake.

I don't understand folks that take the pipe back to bare wood either. I usually don't scrape the cake off until it's far too thick, and then only take it back to a dime's thickness or so as long as it's not flaking off further. Hard to see in the original picture but I don't think I'd touch that cake for a good while longer.

As far as back to bare wood,

There are several high end website entires on pipe care that do indeed have the pipe owner doing a complete cake removal every 6 months.

Is it needed? maybe not. Maybe it is. If you want to get rid of a ghost, 90% of it will be in that cake..
