I tried it for the first time recently and found that I really like M 79. I dig the strange melange of flavors - too many for me to pick them all out, but I definitely get cocoa, root beer, and mint among others. It's sort of like a codger burley with Lakeland overtones. And I don't find it to be particularly goopy, either. Hard for me to believe STG won't continue making it, or at least some facsimile of it.

For decades, it was Sutliff's number one seller. I've heard Molto Dulce became number one, but I do know that was after 2015 according to what Sutliff told me back then. It was the only Sutliff blend that Estervals sold when I bought from them a few years ago.

Btw, the formula was changed in the late 1990s because the FDA told them to. I was told that one of the ingredients in the original version and for decades afterward was used in making gunpowder. Not sure if that was the ingredient that the FDA objected to, though.

I’ve always enjoyed a good dollop of sulfur in my tobacco.

I just remembered that the FDA told Sutliff that they couldn't use musk as a topping any more, and that prompted a change in the formula. I was told that by Sutliff's blender at the time, Carl McAllister. It took him 37 tries to make a successful recreation. He knew a man who smoked a tub of Mixture #79 a month, and he was the taste tester for Carl's attempts at recreation. Carl said it was the hardest thing he ever did as a blender.

Saltpeter (potassium nitrate) maybe? Nah, it couldn't have been, as it is rumored to promote impotence and THAT would NEVER have worked for Hef!
