Wow, that piece has been around! I'd guess it's a home made piece. Is that a cherry wood? More photos would be helpful I'm sure others here would know much more though.

Its a stylized "L". Birchwood was used during WWII in Denmark and France as briar was hard to come by with mediterranean blockades. Start researching there. La Rocca in Italy uses a similar style L in their stamp today.
Interesting information. I just thought it was a home made camp fire piece.
