Title edited for caps. Rule 9. Original:
Tobaccos that won't bite your tongue...at all!

For those of us who are super prone to tongue bite, which tobaccos have you found to be most merciful?

After decades of trying just about everything, I have landed on these three:
Prince Albert / Carter Hall (basically the same tobacco)
Sutliff Vanilla Custard -- this one is a shocker, I know, but others agree. It is HEAVILY cased/topped, and you can smell it even when double-bagged in freezer-width ziplocks! (which are, btw, the ultimate tobacco pouch)

Don’t forget our old friends Sir Walter Raleigh and Velvet.

People do not change.

In order for pipe smoking to become so popular about one in four adult men smoked a pipe in 1940 tongue bite had to be minimized.

Every one of those classic codger blends was formulated with three goals in mind.

No tongue bite

Good taste

And they without doubt had several girls give opinions on how good the aroma was.:)

I think for me D&R tobacco’s are the most forgiving but I’m prone to some tongue irritation no matter what I do. I totally agree with Prince Albert and Carter Hall being mild on the tongue also, perhaps try more over the counter blends. Also… charcoal filters help.
Yes! As I age like fine tobacco, my mouth grows more sensitive. I was ready to quit the pipe until I finally gave filters a fair trial. My most recent, and all future purchases -- 9mm charcoal filtered pipes. Now I can enjoy again even my ancient Rattray's and McClelland blends, with neither bite nor ashtray mouth.

Thank you for the recommendation! I will give this a try.
You are very welcome. It is definitely an aromatic, flavored blend. I chose to share that one because, as the name suggests, it's not very bitey. But Boswell's makes other delicious blends as well.
Two of my other favorites are:

An English blend called Northwoods

Another aromatic called Piper's Pleasure

All of their blends can be ordered online from their website.

I love filtered pipes and have largely neglected the unfiltered pipes in my collection until I recently started using both meer chips and the Nording Keystones in the bottom of every bowl. What a game changer! These really do work and I like them so much that I even toss a few in my Systems and 9mm filter pipes. About 1/4 of the depth of the bowl not only improves the taste and reduces tongue bite, but also seems to greatly improve the draw of almost every pipe.

When I ash out the pipe I put it into a little jar, then run it across a pasta sieve spoon that has larger holes. All the ash goes away, sometimes there is a bit of tobacco left, and I can use the chips again.

Also great for cold weather quick smokes. I fill the bowl about halfway with the chips, then smoke on the top rather than down at the heel. These have made a real improvement in my smoking enjoyment.

Honestly, I have realized that VAs are much kinder to me than burleys. One of my favorite all day smokers is PS Natural Dutch Cavendish. From the first bowl I found it delicious, burns perfect and tastes great in every pipe. I'm probably on my third ounce now. Great stuff.

For me, it's really been almost anything out of C&D.

Daughters and Ryan is a shell of its former self. There's only a few blends left after the sale so current availability doesn't represent what they were just a few years ago.

Ah, now we enter another excellent discussion. How to smoke our unfiltered pipes without tongue bite.
I have heard that denicool silica granules are better than either meerschaum chips or nording keystones. I am currently testing denicool. I am also testing my own idea, charcoal granules, which are used to amend soil in houseplants and which are about the same size as denicool granules.

Yes Daughters & Ryan, remarkably 3 Sails doesn’t bite me. I use it frequently and generally I’ll add a very small amount of C&D White Burley or GH&Co Kendal Mixed. I will add, that it’s not for everyone, some find it too dry. It’s also a shag cut.
