Hello. I just won this pipe on auction that I didn’t expect to win. I thought this was maybe an old Pipe-Dan pipe but actually, it’s not stamped like Pipe-Dan pipes are said to be stamped according to pipedia. I don’t have it yet but only the pictures from the auction site. I’m showing the screen captures. I was thinking this was valuable and old but it didn’t cost much. The stem is orific which really throws me. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks! 5BC4502B-69DB-4807-8B24-536EC04B239D.jpegFEFCD5F3-1794-498E-9B5C-AC767D7BE488.jpeg25FA9FD8-0648-47AB-9750-46AABB494D78.jpeg16D0602C-6321-4808-9E75-662F46F415EB.jpeg2045E7AA-D56E-460D-96A1-33F3BD6E4FE8.jpegA8263DDA-4DCC-473C-8823-2A4FA283D7B6.jpeg

Maybe I made a bad buy. I thought maybe it had some value. After the Dan is an “S.” I thought this was “S” apostrophe but it could just be “S.” Hm…well, maybe that’s why it didn’t cost much.

I guess I thought if it was a really old Pipe-Dan, that I could trade it on smokingpipes. But maybe I misfired.

It could be a true collectible; I have no idea. I just know that if it were in my hands, I’d cut off the top 4 or 5 inches of the bowl to make it a normal-proportioned pipe and I’d replace the stem. There’s no way I’d put that finger in my mouth.
Ha ha. Yes. When I saw it, I thought it was collectible, and I could trade it. But I’m on cough medicine and now I feel pretty silly. I have a pretty bad track record around here. This is my second public shaming with bad buys. No excuse. But it wasn’t expensive. I wasn’t thinking of smoking it. I thought it was collectible and that I could trade it. But now I realize that that stem cannot be original. Hmm…maybe someone out there wants it. I’m still wondering, is this Pipe Dan?

I wouldn't modify it other than to get a new stem made. It really LOOKS like a Pipe Dan extreme stack,I have no idea about the stamping or actual origin.
Briarville will do a stem I hear. A Vulcanite one. Hmm…I wonder if there’s any way to identify this positively. Dan and then S.

Okay, first: I really know nothing about this pipe or the Pipe Dan brand.

But: Is it possible you’re misreading the “S” as being part of the brand name? Maybe the “S” is actually the shape designation, as in “Stack.”

Yes. It could be. There is no guide I can find so we have to guess. It’s possible. This is not marked like any Dan Pipes were. I’m wondering if this couldn’t be a very early one. Maybe it’s impossible to date anyway. This is the second time I’m a bit down on myself for making a silly buy. This was an impulse. The blast looks great. I’m thinking this is an artisan work but not something I would actually smoke. Hmm…I bid on this thinking if I won it, I’d trade it but now I think it goes in a drawer. Oh well.

I think you may find your answer when the pipe arrives. Although the “DAN” stamping looks similar to the Pipe Dan pipes I’ve seen online, they all also include, to the left of that stamp, the name “Pipe-Dan” and, at least in one example, the city of origin: “Copenhagen.” But that part of the pipe isn’t included among the seller’s photos.

Maybe. There are other photos that I didn’t include here and I’m not seeing it there but maybe there are more markings. Let’s see.
Interesting pipe. Get a new stem and clean it up. Might be good for flakes.
I may need to send it off from where I am in Japan, to the U.S., and back - or to somewhere to trade if it’s trade-able. By the way, do you know if I can get a standard shape/freehand vulcanite replacement or do I need to get a hand cut one and what’s the difference between block, rod and SEM ebonite? Anybody?
Ask the seller what brand it is and where they got it.
I’ll just wait until it arrives. There are a lot of pipes in this lot and I’ve a feeling the seller has no idea.

Hey, anytime we’re buying from an unknown eBay seller, it’s a gamble. Half the time, they don’t even know what they’re selling themselves. (I was recently tempted by a number of pipes from a seller who described everything as “mint” and “pristine,” when in fact they had all been smoked, needed reaming, and had rim char.)

I’m currently holding my breath for a purchase of my own… a “Sergio” that may or may not be authentic, may or may not be diminutive, may or may not even be smokeable. I’m skeptical because it’s quite a rare pipe—a transitional Caminetto/Ascorti, for want of a better description, of which fewer than 1,000 were made over a period of just three months in 1980—and I won it for less than $100.

This pipe doesn't appear to be stamped, either. It looks like a mask was applied before sandblasting. Very unusual.
Is that it? That is interesting. It really does seem unique. It’s too bad there’s no easy info on hand. I searched pipedia and pipephil.

Right. But I should have looked more carefully at that stem. When people said it’s been cut I thought, “oh yeah.” But you’re right that it’s a gamble and we shouldn’t wager more than we care to lose. This wasn’t too bad. It may turn into something. It’s still and interesting pipe. It’s just not easy for me to replace the stem. Maybe someone else will want it. But I still have a feeling it’s an early Dan and maybe collectible for someone. Just a shame about the stem.

Thanks for a very amusing and informative thread about some consequences to buying without having a clue about what you're doing.

Start here: Pibe-Dan - Pipedia - https://pipedia.org/wiki/Pibe-Dan
Then keep searching other sources.

The butchered stem was an obvious clue that something was rotten in the state of Denmark. The intent was to buy it and flip it, thalidomide stem and all? Really? That stem isn't competent enough to be incompetent.

Japan is home to some of the world's finest carvers. Are you sure that there's no pipe repair in Japan? Maybe check with Nomura in Tokyo.
