So here's a thing: AI-generated lists for pipe tobacco. If you haven't tried this yet, you ought to give it a test drive: OpenAI API - https://platform.openai.com/playground.

I asked it "What are the 9 most popular English pipe tobacco blends?"

I have heard that OpenAI and ChatGPT will soon make Google obsolete (which is a huge score for Microsoft, who just bought the tech startup behind ChatGPT for $10 billion). I have also heard that it isn't technically connected to the internet. So I don't know what voodoo magic it is using. Of course, the result isn't terribly informative: numbers are 1-3 and 7 are solid and obvious (even if they are highly debatable), but the rest aren't "English" by any stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless, the fact that it gave us a list of legitimate tobacco blends is respectable.

I have no idea what criteria that program was using, but doesn't pan out for my tastes.

They call these things AI, but I heard a good program on NPR about these that said that these are not truly AI programs, but close. I am not schooled in technology garbledy gook enough to be able to convey what they really are, but... seems like they impress some folks.

The program I mentioned above had a kid reading a 7th grade science report that it had written and it was also full of errors. It had said that Saturn could fit the entire solar system inside of it, and several other obvious errors.

At first English teachers were afraid that students would be using them to write research papers, but it seems they are horrible at that also.

AI isn't scary.. Yet. But it bothers me in so many different levels. I think it's one thing to enhance productivity by assisting human activity. But to give decision making capability is just simply crazy. Squash them now. I'm not very religious person, but I think this is why religion is necessary for some people. Put fear of God into those engineers.

They are NOT really AI, but more like random word and phrase generators. They used the programs for a while during covid as a substitute for therapist in several insurance programs, but they were the worst. It was reported that in talking to one suicidal patient that it started going over different ways to kill yourself. And, in almost every case it was just full of wrong or false responses.

It makes sense that MS bought them, as they tend to make the worst decisions.

Thing is, they are also working on learning capability. It starts with wrong response. But with so many people plugged into internet, its ability to increase its capability multiplies exponentially.

Scary thing is the fact it's not truly "intelligent". It bases its findings from collected data and how many times those data matches the correct response from whatever its interacting with. There's no true human side to this equation. Sometimes logical answer isn't necessary the best answer.

Not sure if I make sense.

Yes, but that is why these aren't real AI. They are not learning, just sort of randomly generating words and phrases. This sort of thing impresses some folks... I guess it impresses billionaires enough to buy them, ha ha.
